IJOY Captain PD270 Box Mod Intro

The IJOY Captain PD270 is a new 234W regulated mod that brings all the goodies we have come to expect from any new mod worth its weight in zinc alloy, starting with 234 variable watts of power and temperature control with TCR.

There’s more, and IJOY breaks down the name like an automobile VIN number:

“P on behalf of the high performance, D on behalf of the dual batteries, 270 on behalf of the 20700 batteries.” And thus we have PD270. OK then. But wait, what’s this 20700 battery?

Originally developed for use in electric bikes, and considered for use in Tesla electric cars, the 20700 battery is a bit larger (20 mm x 70 mm vs 18 mm x 65 mm) than the ubiquitous 18650 that we have come to know and love. Larger size generally means larger performance, and the included IJOY 20700 batteries claim an unsubstantiated continuous discharge rate of 40 A and a pulse rate of 85 A, with a 3000 mAh capacity.

Some claim that the 20700 battery will replace the 18650 as the future of vaping. I don’t know – did they say that about the 26650 too? Regardless, don’t toss those old 18650 batteries in the recycle bin just yet – the Captain will happily use them with the included adapter.

Regardless of which batteries you use, the Captain is regulated by the IWEPAL chip, which you control via the side-mounted buttons and OLED, much like the SMOK Alien. The large, square screen provides just about every detail of your vaping stats and settings, including wattage, resistance, amperage, battery life, mode (power, TC, TCR), and puff count.

It’s a relatively compact mod considering the larger batteries, and will accommodate atomizers up to 30 mm without overhang.

According to IJOY the Captain will be available in a mind-numbing 54 different color combinations – three different chassis colors: gunmetal, black, and rainbow. Each different chassis color will be wrapped in your choice of 18 different skin colors.

I found the Captain on pre-order for $80 in black, $81 for gunmetal or rainbow, and ElementVape shows the Captain for 75 bucks.

I admit that I am intrigued by the Captain and the 20700 batteries, but with a pile of LG 3000 mAh 18650 batteries on hand, it’s nice that the Captain will accept either. Much like switching from vinyl records to CDs to mp3 files, or VHS tapes to laserdisc to DVD to streaming movies, all I hear is a giant sucking sound as the “future of vaping” empties my wallet.

And with 54 different color combinations, I can’t wait to see the drop-down menu when ordering online: do I want the gunmetal mod with carbon fiber, the black with lime green python? Or maybe the rainbow chassis with red python? Maybe one of the other 51 listed colors/patterns? Wow!

The Captain looks like a relatively compact mod. It’s shorter and just a bit wider than a Revenant Cartel 160 that I have on hand. With gobs of power and style to spare, and coming from IJOY, I expect solid value and reliable performance.

Now…which color…?
