Mig Vapor Sub Herb Black intro
A while back I reviewed the Sub Herb by Mig Vapor, today we are going to look at the brand new Sub Herb Black. Mig Vapor not only changed the color and tinted the glass black for better discretion, but also improved the airflow. I prefer the draw on the new Sub Herb black even more than the original.
When I spoke with Mig Vapor, they told me how hard they worked to find the perfect balance of airflow for this device.
Besides the airflow and color, Mig Vapor has also added a spring loaded ceramic filter, which holds your herb in place so that it doesn’t fly around while using it. Let’s take a closer look…

The Mig Vapor Sub Herb Black comes with dark tinted glass and has a beautiful black finish. It looks like a sub-ohm tank, so you can throw the Sub Herb Black on a vape mod and most people won’t even know the difference. One of the things I hoped for on the original version was the airflow, which has been increased.
I think they have achieved the perfect amount of draw resistance. According to Mig Vapor, if they would have made it any bigger, the Sub Herb Black would not be able to function as effectively as it does.
The Sub Herb Black kit comes in a colorful box with a bunch of goodies. I love the updated vape band that they give you which is now black and green instead of clear. You also get tools and all of the accessories for using your Sub Herb black with waxy concentrates.
The thing about the Sub Herb Black is that it’s not for beginners. There is a learning curve to understand exactly how to use it properly, which comes from experience using it. If you are using it properly then you can get a great vape out of it. However, it may take some time to learn the ropes.
Since this piece hooks up to your mod, you have full control over the wattage output. I would strongly recommend starting low, around 20 watts. Then pulse the atomizer until you feel it heating up, and see the vapor beginning to form. Then throw on the cap and let ‘er rip!
At some point you may want to stir or pack the herb, so that you can get the most out of it. I listed this as a con, although this is common with most herbal vaporizers including the Pax 2.
Overall I would say the Sub Herb Black performs very similar to the original, however the added features makes it even more enjoyable to use. The draw resistance is a lot better and the ceramic filter not only holds the herb in place, but increases heat conduction, resulting in more vapor.
The thing with the Sub Herb Black is that you have full control over your experience. If you want to crank it up to 27 watts, it will hit really hard. If you just want great flavor, I would recommend staying at around 20-25 watts.
Keep in mind if you are chain-vaping it at a high wattage, the ceramic can get hot and you may run the risk of charring your herb. However, If used properly, the Sub Herb Black can vaporize without combustion. Just take breaks between hits to let the ceramic cool down, and never exceed the recommended wattage. Oh yea, and NEVER use it in temp control mode!
One last tip that I would like to mention is that the Sub Herb is actually super easy to clean. All you need to do is soak it in alcohol, give it a wipe and it will look brand new again. The herb chamber will eventually turn black in color, but I noticed this has a positive impact on flavor.
It is kind of like when you have an old barbecue grill, and you don’t clean it for a while.
- Compatible with existing mod
- On demand heating
- Nice draw resistance
- Made from good quality material (pyrex and stainless steel)
- Can also vape wax concentrates
- Takes some time to learn how to use
- Ceramic plate is not removable from the base
- May need to stir/re-pack your herbs during a session
To be totally honest, the Sub Herb Black does take some practice to use. You might not even get the results you were hoping for at first. However, once you understand how it works better, and get some experience with it, you can get a really nice vape. For less than a third the price of the MigVapor Matrix, this is totally worth it for somebody who already owns a vape mod.
In summary, the Mig Vapor Sub Herb Black is a unique little tank that does the job. It is great if you want to start vaporizing herb without spending over a $100 on a whole new setup. It is also great if you are on the go and don’t want to bring a hundred vapes with you all the time. It is very easy to conceal and break out when necessary making it ideal for on-the-go situations.
