London Firefighters Promote Vaping As a Safer Choice

In the U.K., it seems like every government agency is pro-vaping!

London’s firefighters are backing vaping as a way to reduce the danger from smoking-related home fires.

The London Fire Brigade — the massive city’s metropolitan fire department — announced that it “welcomes Public Health England’s support for e-cigarettes as a key way to help smokers quit tobacco smoking to help reduce the number of smoking related fire deaths.”

Public Health England (PHE) has launched its annual quit-smoking campaign called Stoptober, and for the first time is suggesting smokers try e-cigarettes as a way to quit. This year marks the sixth Stoptober event, and the first with sponsorship by a vaping organization, the Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA), a vendor group.

The Fire Brigade says that smoking causes more than half of the fire deaths in homes, despite causing just nine percent of accidental fires. Vaping accidents, which are very rare, have caused no known deaths, according to the firefighters.

“Astonishingly, our statistics show that in the past three years there have been just over 3580 smoking fires compared to just 15 fires caused by e-cigarettes, said Dan Daly, the Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety.

“Our crews have had to attend numerous fires caused by a cigarette that’s been carelessly discarded. It’s clear that quitting tobacco is not only good for your health but it can also save you from a devastating fire in your home.

“The Brigade has no recorded deaths or injuries due to vaping equipment catching fire. However, e-cigarette users are reminded they still carry the risk of a fire and they should never leave their e-cigarette on charge while they are away from the house or asleep, and always use the correct type of charger.”

That advice aligns with suggestions from vaping battery experts. Following common-sense battery safety tips allows most vapers to use their favorite mods without worry. Yet the news is quick to leap on every “vape explosion”, and encourage public fear of our life-saving devices.

Smokers created vaping without any help from the tobacco industry or anti-smoking crusaders, and vapers have the right to keep innovating to help themselves.
