Vype Pebble review | Is it more than cute?

The Vype Pebble is a little pod mod cleverly designed for ease-of-use with the beginner vaper in mind.

Vype Pebble Intro

Who said all ecigs need to look boxy or tubular? It wasn’t the designers of the Pebble. The Vype Pebble is an affordable and adorable little MTL device that is as as simple to use any other plug ‘n play device… and it’s also one of the most ergonomic and comfortable I’ve ever held.

For those that haven’t seen it yet, Vype used super-slick marketing for the Pebble including a dope commercial and a downloadable launch track. Being a fan (or sucker) of such things, I had to try it out to see if there was more to the device than just an exciting roll-out. Here’s a bit of that marketing we saw before we purchased the device.

Factor in the form

Vype-Pebble-vs-JUUL

Okay, another pod vape based on a two-part system. Just a battery and a pod. Whoop-de-doo. But the form factor is a departure from the oft-copied design of the JUUL — a device that looks like a flash drive.

The Pebble looks like, well, a pebble. I asked my wife what she thought it looked like, and without knowing the name of the device, she said “a pebble” or a “skipping stone”. A “well used bar of soap” also was mentioned.

Even though I didn’t expect this to perform differently than any other device with similar specs, I still wanted one. I like different form factors to my vapes, even if the performance is nothing new.

The basics

  • Put the pod in the device until it clicks
  • Hold the on button (for a second)
  • Vape

I hope I didn’t lose anyone with those complicated instructions. But seriously, it’s that simple. No muss, no fuss.

Turing the device on and off, I assume, saves battery. I haven’t clocked it, but the device will turn itself off after a several minutes (maybe 10?) of non-use. The device is on when the indicator light is red (a crazy odd choice of colors to signify “on”).

Performance of the Pebble

Vype-Pebble

A flavorful and warm MTL draw with a restricted, automatic draw. The vapor from the Pebble won’t cause a scene, but it may start a conversation when someone sees it.

The pods have all been consistent in vapor, taste and overall performance. And I haven’t gotten as much a tiny drop of leaking. No spitting. No hot-pops either.

Pebble Pods

Vype-Pebble

The color-coded, closed-system Pebble pods come in flavors ranging from Fresh Apple, Golden Tobacco (included in the kit), Master Blend, Tingling Mint, Smooth Vanilla, and Wild Berries. All the flavors taste fairly clean and they can be identified blindly with just vaping them, though the color-coding is appreciated. I wish more makers of devices like this did that very thing for their pre-filled pods!

The mouthpiece for the Pebble is built right into the top of the pod. It’s flat with sunken-in parts for the lips. You barely even have to open up your mouth to draw in it. It’s a really nice mouthpiece! Very ergonomic; very comfortable.

But, there's a “but”

There is one detail about the Vype Pebble that ensures that I won’t continue to use it. After vaping on it, I dunno… I felt some scratchiness in my throat. It tasted fine though. No dry hits… necessarily. I hacked the pod to investigate.

That is when I saw it… a silica wick. Wow. Word?

It’s been almost three years now since silica wicks went all dodo bird — or so I thought. Although, silica does have its merits: it can sometimes wick well, it can be dry burned clean, withstand high temps, and can last a long time. But there is something to the vape that can feel off (especially when you can experience the difference with cotton.) Years ago (like 2013 and before) we pretty much all used silica. But that was then.

Silica is old school, but for most (now) not in a “cool” kinda old school way. In some very low power applications like “510 dripping atomizers” it’s fine (and even optimal), but I don’t think it is for this device. In those, the wicks are almost non-existent.

I know there are still those that use silica (or ekowool), but it’s wildly outdated for most vapers. For me, all the efforts to make the Pebble the “new thing” went out the window with that one choice. It’s actually an old thing. A good looking fossil.

Verdict

On the whole, I can hardly find anything negative to say about this device. The flavors taste good, the vapor is decent, and it performs how it should. It is more than just cute! But the one real con for me is also the one thing that I can’t look past. I am not here to dis on silica wicks (any more than I already did), but I think it was a poor decision to go that route.

And although I was able to hack the pods, it was only for refilling. And I haven’t found any real tricks that amount to more than a hack job! I was still able to use it after the hack, but it was nothing that I would write about. It was pretty janky afterward.

If I could figure out a way to rewick the Pebble with cotton, I would gladly use it (and that would be worth an article). But I doubt I even try anymore. Why? There are devices that vape just like this (if not better) with cotton. Of course, there are still those that prefer silica wicks. If that is you, you may want to give this device a shot. If you use cotton, I recommend you keep using it and look elsewhere unless you like traveling back in time.

I was ready to go out and buy one of these things until I read that last part. Silica in 2017!? Yikes.

Finally a poll where I agree with the VAST majority of readers… so far. Where are all the silica users? 😛

Great portable device for on the go and good build quality (still going strong after a few drops). I managed to get 10% off mine with code: CMP9B3D on the go vype website. Portability is the key so if you’re active and travel around a bit it’s perfect and not the end of the world if you drop or lose it.?!

Thinking u need 2 reboot ur taste buds mate lol…golden tobacco & master blend are probably the worst smell/taste vapes ive ever tried, thought with all its billions British American Tobacco could of come up with a more realistic tobacco experience!…Can anyone reccomend a tobacco vape thats closest to real thing, as i’m not into all these different flavors!…thanks.
