Smoking Vapor Mi-One Review: Best New MTL AIO?

Bigger isn’t always better

Now you see it, now you don’t! Smoking Vapor’s new Mi-One is a small and discreet all-in-one kit, designed for mouth-to-lung vapers. The Mi-One boasts an impressive 3.5mL e-liquid capacity and 1100mAh internal battery. This pocket-sized vape comes in a range of colorful finishes that remind me of iridescent abalone shell (as well as a grainy “black sand” finish). The kit comes complete with color-coordinated acrylic drip tip and decorative lanyard. The kit also comes with two 0.6-ohm SS316 MTL coils which look similar to Joyetech’s AIO coils (think Cubis). The atomizer and coil screw straight into the tank via the child-lock system. Let’s take a closer look and see how the Mi-One vapes, shall we?

We received the Smoking Vapor Mi-One kit from VaporDNA for the purpose of this review.

Notable Remarks

Don’t judge a book by its cover

Long before I’d unboxed Smoking Vapor’s Mi-One kit, I’d seen countless photos of a tiny AIO vape device that looks like psychedelic mother-of-pearl. So I was a bit disappointed to find that our Mi-One is finished in “black sand”. It adds texture, just not a lot of visual appeal (at least not like the other finishes.)

I’ve heard a few reports of the acrylic abalone peeling or being poorly cut. Mine is fine except where the USB opening is cut out. It doesn’t really follow the shape of the USB port, instead it’s just an oblong opening. It’s not a big deal, I guess, just a manufacturing misstep.

Then there’s the size. Based on the macro photos I’d originally seen of the Mi-One, I thought it would be bigger than it actually is. This thing is dwarfed by my hand. But then, I am 6’2”. With atomizer and drip tip in place, it’s still only 68mm tall. And for such a small device, the 3.5mL capacity is impressive. Let’s just hope the battery keeps up.

The coils

The Mi-One 0.6 ohm coils can be primed with about 5 drips of e-liquid into the core. The coil screws into the bottom of the atomizer, much like the Joyetech AIO coils, which can also be used with the Mi-One (Kanger TOGO Mini CLOCC 0.5 ohm coils are compatible too). Simply fill the tank with e-liquid up to the max capacity marker, screw in the atomizer, wait a few minutes, and you’re good to go.

I don’t like the child-proof lock. It functions much like a medicine bottle, only you’re working with a much finer margin of error. It’s easy to mess up the alignment and screw in on an angle. Pay attention to the airflow control, since this sliding ring is what you press down to screw/unscrew the atomizer.

Plug-and-play simplicity

It doesn’t get much simpler than this (unless you’re using a pod mod); simply press the fire button and inhale. No variable wattage, no TC, no display. The LED ring around the fire button lights green, yellow and red to indicate the remaining battery life. The internal 1100mAh battery life won’t be enough for everybody’s all-day use. That’s one of the ironies of the Mi-One: tank capacity outstrips battery life. Although you can pass-through vape with it as well.

Juicing it up and airflow

Smoking Vapor claim that you can even use the Mi-One with high VG e-liquids. I’m not sure why you’d want to go high VG on an MTL device, but for the sake of science, I did try different ratios with the Mi-One – 50/50, 40/60, 30/70 PG/VG. The flavor notes are accurate throughout. I saw that GrimmGreen compared the coil to an Aspire Nautilus Mini, but I found the experience a bit underwhelming.

The airflow control doesn’t make a big difference to the vape, so I kept it wide open.

Taking long draws and chain-vaping led to a slightly burnt taste. So, I changed out the coil. The 2nd coil didn’t fare too well and before long it was tasting kinda toasted too.

Earlier, I would’ve given the Mi-One the thumbs-up. But from my experience, the coils are a bit hit-and-miss.

  • Easy to use
  • Lots of flavor
  • Possibility to use different PG/VG ratios
  • Personalize the device with a range of different “shells”
  • Tank capacity
  • Pass-through vaping
  • Compatible with Joyetech AIO and Kanger TOGO Mini CLOCC coils
  • Price (around $40 for the AIO and $15 for a 5-pack of coils)

  • Lanyard seems unnecessary/impractical
  • Battery life
  • No variable wattage
  • Petite design won’t be ergonomic for everyone
  • Threading on atomizer/tank and “child lock”
  • Careful when taking long hits / chain vaping

I’ve heard a lot of praise for the Mi-One. Unfortunately, it’s not for me. I can’t condemn it completely though, since the size, the looks, and simplicity are all appealing. My main problem is the coils. If they’d held up better, I would have more praise for it, and I could easily recommend it. But when the coils can’t keep up past the 4th or 5th drag, it’s disheartening. It makes me not want to pick it up.

Having said that, since it takes other manufacturer’s coils, it stands a chance of performing better than this. But I can only judge it on what it came with.
