iStick TC 40W Intro

Thanks to VaporDNA for supplying the iStick TC 40w base model for review.

It’s small, lightweight, and inexpensive, but is that all to the iStick TC 40w? It’s all of those, it’s also sturdy and delivers temperature control for under $40. While it won’t win any awards for design, the designers took this opportunity to improve a few things since the previous iStick. The addition of a menu button, to switch between wattage and temperature control, also the shell has been redesigned, to alleviate the overhang of 23mm atomizers. Eleaf also took advantage of the lightweight and compact design by adding a place to attach a lanyard. For the price it gets the job done, without any extras or niceties that would simply raise the price for us.
The iStick TC 40w is not likely to draw lots of attention, partly due to it’s small size, and minimalistic design. The iStick TC 40w’s minimalist design that is simple and pleasing, fits well even in small hands and comfortable to use. Other than the addition of the menu button, and 23mm tanks now fitting without overhang, the iStick TC 40w looks much like its predecessors.
The iStick TC 40w has a minor issue here with the fit and finish, parts don’t line up as smoothly as they could. However it is a minor issue as there are no rough edges or signs that anything is likely to fall off or break. The buttons have only the slightest rattle that can be heard by shaking next to your ear, and have a nice solid click to them when pressed.
How does it Vape
I honestly expected the iStick to deliver well below other temperature control mods I’ve used. For temperature control testing, I relied on my trusty Kanger subtank mini with Kanger Ni200 coils, and a 90pg/10vg blend from my local vape store. While it does lack any adjustment to how fast it will heat the coil, (40w) it does a good job once it gets to our desired temperature.
Simply holding the fire button for a moment before vaping the coil should be ready by the time it reaches our mouth. The temperature control worked like a charm, and I had no issue with cotton burning, even at 315c. (dry cotton burns at 300c) As with temperature control, we gain the benefit of longer battery life, as the drain on the battery drops once desired temperature is reached. On the wattage side, the iStick works well, whether we want to use sub-ohm or a higher resistance disposable.
Who is this for
I think the iStick TC 40w is a decent entry level device, that gives us the standard wattage mode, whilst also giving us the option of temp control vaping. If you’d like to try temperature control without investing a lot of money. If a more expensive mod is just not in your budget. If you want something better than an ego style battery, but don’t want to worry too much, if it’s lost or stolen. Looking to give vaping as a gift to a smoker. Then the iStick TC 40w might be the right choice for you.
- Low price point.
- Pass through vaping
- Temp control.
- Compact and lightweight
- Stealth display
I like the price, at $20 less than the competitors the iStick TC 40w delivers a lot. The addition of a menu button is a nice idea, but more about it in the next section. Stealth vaping option, oh how I wish all devices had this. Stealth disables the display lighting up when we’re just vaping, not adjusting settings. The stealth option also gives, much greater battery life, by saving the power normally drained from lighting the display. It’s compact size and light weight makes the iStick TC 40w easy to carry around all day. And finally, the spring loaded pin, and included ego adaptor insured that every tank, connected and worked, without issue.
- 40w maximum
The lanyard loop, while I wouldn’t have put it on the bottom, and it is very secure, it will ultimately become a place that is hard to clean out and a trap for any spilled or leaked e-liquid. The menu button, while I feel it was a good idea, on the iStick TC 40w it only switches between wattage and temp modes. Even the stealth and resistance lock make use of all the other buttons, it’s just severely under utilized. The battery life is 2600mah, while stealth mode will greatly improve the battery life, I would still prefer longer than the life of a standard 18650 battery in this type of device.
The iStick TC 40w is in no way a bad device, and while it has few pros, it also has few cons. The 40w limitation may provide less than desired results for some. For those moving up from ego batteries, there should be a noticeable improvement in the vaping experience, and best of all, with the included ego adaptor you can continue to use your disposable ego tanks until they burn out.
The iStick may not be the device for everyone, but if you’ve been struggling to quit smoking with cigarette and ego style batteries. On a budget or just don’t want an inexpensive way to try temperature control. Find them failing to give you a satisfaction great enough to pass on a cigarette. Then the iStick TC 40w should provide enough power and features to help you make that step.
