Kanger SUBOX Intro

We review the new Kangertech Subox Mini kit. The Kanger Subox kit comprises of the new Kanger Subtank Mini and the matching Kbox mini 50W box mod. The tank and box mod kit comes in either a white or black matte finish.

The new Kanger Subtank Mini on the Subox is a much improved tank featuring vertical coils and much better flavor than the previous Subtank Mini. The Kbox mini is a 50W box mod that can fire down to 0.3ohm. These things look gorgeous and it is no wonder vapers are going crazy for them!

The tanks and kbox mini come as a combo kit. The Kbox mini box mod can be purchased separately as well if you only want the box mod. I can’t find the tank being sold anywhere on its own yet, but I am sure Kanger will be selling them separately soon as well.

We will structure the review by first reviewing the new Kanger Subtank Mini and compare it to the older Subtank Mini and then review the Kbox Mini separately, finishing with our thoughts on the Kangertech Subox mini kit as a whole.

Notable Remarks

New Subox Kanger Subtank Mini Tank Review and Comparison to the Older Subtank Mini

As mentioned above the Subox Kit includes a newer version of the Subtank Mini, which in our opinion is much improved. Let’s take a look at the differences between the two tanks below.

Coil Design

Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) 0.5 OCC, 1.5 OCC and RBA Coil
Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) 0.5 OCC, 1.5 OCC and RBA Coil

The Subox Mini Tank features a vertical coil build compared with the older coils, which had horizontal coils. I was always under the impression that horizontal coils provided better flavor, but this isn’t the case at all with the Subox tanks. The flavor is in my opinion much improved!

The new coils on the Subox tank also feature different juice flow holes. They look slightly larger and are indented into the coil.

Apart from those two major changes, the coils are the same size and feature the same airflow at the bottom. The coils are interchangeable with the older Kanger subtank minis.

Better Flavor

Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) 0.5 OCC vs. 0.5 Subtank Mini (V1) Coil
Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) 0.5 OCC vs. 0.5 Subtank Mini (V1) Coil

The flavor on these new Kanger Subox coils is absolutely fantastic. We have reviewed over 20 sub ohm tanks now and these new coils are right up there with some of our favorites so far: Crown, Freemax Starre and the Herakles.

No More Leakages! (so far anyway, fingers crossed)

One of our biggest complaints about the Kanger Subtank Mini was that it tended to leak through the air flow holes. Many people had this issue and it was an absolute pain in the ass. It lead to us just not even using our Subtanks anymore. So far I can say we haven’t had any leaking after a week’s worth of vaping and re-filling the tank several times. I hope it stays like this and if it does, it is a good improvement over the original tanks.

Accessories

The new Subox tank no longer comes with a spare Pyrex glass or o-rings. The White Subox does however come with a spare drip tip in white. The Subox tanks also come with RBA sections, as well as spare coils, cotton, screws and a mini screwdriver.

Improved Heat Control on the New Coils and Tank

One thing we noticed on the original subtanks was that vaping above 30Ws lead to the tank , drip tip and vapor getting really hot and sometimes uncomfortably so. The new Kanger Subox tank does a much better job of keeping cool, meaning you can fire it at higher wattages a lot better. I think this is due to the improved air flow, vertical coil design and ceramic coating on the tank.

Improved RBA

Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) vs. Subtank Mini (V1) RBA Deck
Kanger Subtank Mini (V2) vs. Subtank Mini (V1) RBA Deck

The RBA on the Subox kit features a few major differences. Firstly it features two massive juice flow holes on the sides to allow for better wicking. The sides of the RBA are now fixed down with a little screw. You need to unscrew this a tiny bit with the provided screwdriver and then the side panel of the RBA will slide off. The original RBA housing had to be twisted off which wasn’t always the easiest thing to do. The RBA features PEEK insulators and is the same size as the original RBA section. You need to make sure that when wicking the RBA, that you use more cotton than you usually would in order to fill those juice flow holes with cotton.

The RBA seems to wick a lot better and is easier to use now compared to the original. I found the original difficult to wick properly which always resulted in burnt hits. I no longer get these when using the new Subox RBA. I love the flavor on the RBA section and it vapes really well. It is another good improvement on this tank.

Improved Air Flow

The air flow on the Subox Mini tank is slightly different to the original. There are now dual air flow slots and differing sizes of air flow slots. Fully open, the Subox Tank is slightly more airy than the original one. I did find that the air flow was slightly more difficult to adjust and turn, as it is tighter than the original.

Sexy Looks

The Subox tanks come in either a stunning matte white or black finish. I believe the Subox tank has a aqueous ceramic coating (whatever that means), but the box mod section doesn’t. The tank with the box mod together just looks really awesome and my brother and I both really dig the white one. It will be interesting to see going forward how easily the tank and box mod scratch and if the paint at any point starts flaking off. We have been careful with ours so far and have yet to have any paint coming off.

Less Crackling and Spitting

Another thing we noticed was that the new Subox tank doesn’t seem to crackle or spit as much our as older Subtank Minis did. Our older subtanks all crackled and spat quite a bit, but this doesn’t seem to be the case on the newer Subox ones at all, which is a positive!

Vaping the 0.5ohm Coil on the White Subox Tank

We used our Fa-Q e-liquid Miss Samoa e-liquid for this review which is a 75% VG e-juice. We have been using this on all of our sub ohm tank reviews for better consistency across the reviews.

  • 10W – Only a faint whisp of vapor.
  • 20W – A nice cool vape with some decent clouds already. The flavor is still lacking slightly at this wattage.
  • 30W – A lovely warmish vape with plumes of tasty vapor. The flavor is now starting to become more pronounced.
  • 35W – This is my personal sweet spot for this tank. It’s a nice warm vape without being too hot. The new coils and air flow do a great job of keeping the tank relatively cool, which is a big improvement over the original tank and drip tip which tended to get very hot very quickly.
  • 40W – A delightful warm vape now. On longer inhales the vapor will get a bit too warm for my liking, but the flavor is absolutely terrific, much better than the original subtank mini if you ask me. If you chain vape at this wattage the coil will start to edge on a burnt hit, but we never really got a full burnt hit (using a 75% VG e-juice).

Overall the Subox mini tank is terrific and the flavor and clouds were warm and tasty. The performance is much improved over the original tank.

Small Size

This was another thing that impressed me about the Kanger Subox. I was expecting it to be a lot larger, but credit to Kanger for making it really small and sleek. Check out the picture below to see it compared to some other popular box mods to get an idea as to its size. It is a bit bigger than an iStick 30W and a bit smaller than the new Coolfire IV by Innokin (big fan of that one as well). It fits absolutely perfectly and comfortably in your hand.

Sexy Looks

Kanger KBOX Mini White and Black Edition
Kanger KBOX Mini White and Black Edition

I think this is a big reason a lot of vapers will be purchasing the Subox tank and box mod combo. The complete white and black paint job and black and red one, just look stunning. This is the first type of box mod and tank (bar maybe the Coolfire IV) that just look really cool. I am a bit of a sucker when it comes to looks (who isn’t?) and the white Subox is right up my street. My brother is absolutely loving it as well and takes it everywhere with him, much to the awe of his friends, who immediately ask where they can get one! For those vapers looking for something that looks really sexy then the Subox box mod and tank combo is a must buy.

Removable 18650 Battery and Magnetic Battery Cover

Kanger KBOX Mini Battery Compartment (Door)
Kanger KBOX Mini Battery Compartment (Door)

I really like that the Kanger Suboxes come with the ability to use a removable 18650 battery. Please note that there is no 18650 battery in the kit and please make sure you are using a suitable battery for sub ohm vaping (check out our best 18650 battery article for more info). This was one negative on the Coolfire IV that we reviewed the other day and one area I think the Subox has an edge.

The magnetic door on the Subox is fantastic and is held into place tightly by plenty of magnets. There is no rattling of the door and it won’t be falling off by accident. You do need to apply a little bit of force to get it off, but it isn’t difficult at all.

Pass Through Charging

My brother and I don’t really ever use pass through charging, but it is a nice feature on the Kanger Subox box mod.

Battery Sticker

Kanger KBOX Mini Battery Battery Sticker
Kanger KBOX Mini Battery Battery Sticker

This is more of a heads up as a lot of people were unsure what the black and red stickers were for in the packs. They can be used to stick on the battery to make sure the color of the battery matches the Kanger Subox. There is a venting hole in the form of the Kanger logo where you can see through onto the battery.

Price

I think for $69.99 the Subox kit is priced pretty well and is a good deal. If I lost mine now I wouldn’t hesitate to get another one straightaway.

Easy to Use Screen and Good Size for Reading

Kanger SUBOX Mini Screen
Kanger SUBOX Mini Screen

Scrolling up and down between wattages is very easy and the accelerator works well. It isn’t too quick which I like. If you adjust the wattage by clicking the plus or minus it will go up or down in 0.1W increments.

The screen seems to have a slight magnifying glass to it, which makes it easier to read for those with bad eyesight. One of our complaints on the Coolfire IV was that the screen was too small and I think the one on the Subox is just right.

You can also flip the screen by holding down the plus and minus buttons. There doesn’t however seem to be a lock feature that I can find, but maybe I am just being silly!

Dislikes

No Spring Loaded Pin

The Kbox mini doesn’t come with a spring loaded pin, so this will mean you might have issues with some tanks. We tried some below to see if they worked or not:

Atlantis 2: works
Nautilus Mini: works
Arctic: works
Delta 2: works
Freemax Starre: works
Cown by Uwell: works
OBS T-VCT: works
Matrix: works
Isub-G: works
Herakles: works

I was expecting to find some tanks that didn’t work, but I couldn’t. I could go on and on trying tanks, but so far they all seem to work, so I can’t complain too much about the pin being fixed. Perhaps some RDAs and RTAs will have issues, but I am not sure. Let me know if you find any that don’t work in the comments section below.

Wattage Issue at Lower Wattages

This was brought to our attention on Reddit, as we were not using the Kanger Subox on the lower wattages, so did not spot this ourselves.

Apparently the Kanger Subox measures DC instead of True RMS. What this means is that at 7W the Subox is actually firing at 16.2W. This could be a big issue for those using mouth to lung type clearomizers like the Nautilus Mini, Protank and Aerotank Mini.

Here is the thread on Reddit where it is explained in more detail (link) and here is a pic by a German vaper called OBI who actually measured the actual wattage at different levels (link). Thanks to Knurlinger on Reddit and OBI for bringing this to people’s attention, as if true it seems like a pretty big issue. It won’t be an issue for those vaping on the Subox tank itself, as that runs at higher wattages, but for those using less powerful clearos, do keep this in mind.

Slight Color Difference between the White Subox Box Mod and Tank

This is just a very picky minor detail, but the tank on the white Subox is a marginally different white to that of the actual box mod section. It isn’t anything major, but a minute observation!

No Temp Control

This isn’t a massive negative, but temp controlled devices are becoming increasingly more available at lower prices, so I would like to see the next version of the Subox have temp control. I realise this might make it more expensive, but with the way the market is heading I think it will have to be introduced at some point on this device.

Verdict

Overall I think the Kangertech Subox is a fantastic little tank and box mod combo and think at $69.99 from VaporDNA it is an absolute steal! As mentioned above, the looks of the Black Subox and White Subox are just stunning and look so dam sexy! Even the packaging is really sexy! I really love it and have yet to come across a set up that looks this good. I can see this kit appealing to so many vapers just because of the looks. Fortunately, the Subox is not just about good looks, as it also performs very well. The new Kanger Subtank Mini on the Subox is a big improvement over the older one, in my eyes. The new vertical coils and improved air flow provide much better flavor at slightly higher wattages. The RBA section is also a good improvement with its larger juice flow holes.

Finally I like that Kanger have added a detailed manual, warnings and wattage recommendations with the Subox kit. This is great and more firms should be following their lead on this to ensure vapers don’t make any silly mistakes, especially when it comes down to battery safety.

Overall, despite the wattage issue at lower wattages and it not having a spring loaded pin, I think the Subox Mini, if used with the provided sexy white and black tanks, is a fantastic great performing combo!

I hope this Kangertech Subox review was useful and if you have any questions, just drop us a comment below.
