What is an AIO?

An AIO is a compact vape that comes in a simple one or two-piece design. It includes everything you need to start vaping out of the box—you just need to add juice, and you are ready to go! AIO vapes come in a variety of sizes and shapes, with the most common being pen and pod-style AIOs.

Pen-style AIOs are two-part designs, with the bottom part housing a built-in battery, and the top part being a tank section. These devices are very similar to standard vape pens, with the main difference being that the atomizer part of the AIO is not removable from the battery.

Pod-style AIOs are almost indistinguishable from standard pod systems at first glance. The main difference is that they use replaceable coils instead of replaceable pods, combining the practicality of pod systems with the better performance that comes with standalone coils. And with the success of the Lost Vape Orion series in 2018, pod boxes that look like walkie-talkies took the market by storm, becoming the latest trend in vaping.

How to use an AIO

AIO vapes are some of the most straightforward devices to operate. Follow these instructions to get a problem-free vape out of your AIO:

  • Prime the coil with a few drops of e-liquid
  • Place it in the tank (or pod)
  • Fill it
  • Let the coil saturate
  • Set the airflow (if it is adjustable)
  • Press the button and vape

If your AIO comes with wattage or voltage adjustability, start from the lower setting and raise until you find your sweet spot. That’s it. Simple, right?

AIOs vs pods: which is best for you?

AIOs come with replaceable coils instead of cartridges. This means that the user only needs to change the coil when its performance drops, without having to purchase a new pod. That makes AIOs more cost-effective, as coils are usually cheaper than pods—although there are exceptions to the rule.

Performance-wise, AIOs have a slight edge over pod systems. Standalone coils will generally perform better than the tiny coils that are fitted inside cartridges. As a result, while pods will generally require higher nicotine strength e-liquid (usually in the form of nic salts,) many AIOs will come with sub ohm coils that will allow you to use them with lower nic concentrations.

Pod systems are winning over AIOs when it comes to ease of use. While an AIO is one of the easiest vapes to operate, you just can’t beat the convenience of a replaceable pod. No need to take stuff apart and get messy. You just pop it in, vape, and replace it with a new one when it’s empty.

If you are after the most user-friendly experience, pod systems are your best bet. But if you want better performance and less money spent in the long run, then an AIO is just what you are looking for.
