What is CBD distillate?

CBD distillate is a potent concentrate distilled from CBD hemp flower. Through the process of distillation, CBD (and some cannabinoids) are extracted and isolated from the other components of the plant. Distillate is generally a translucent amber color, and has a viscous and runny, oil-like texture. It is typically vaporized with a weed pen, but it’s so thick that it can also be dabbed or used to make edibles. Pure distillate doesn’t have much of a taste or smell.

Distillation is not a modern concept. It's been used for centuries for making distilled spirits and liquors. Think of CBD distillates as the "hard liquor" of the hemp world. Both are made possible through distillation. CBD distillates are the most powerful version of CBD you can get. They generally range from 85-99% CBD! And vaping just happens to be one of the best ways to administer them.

A lot of the CBD vapes out there do not actually provide full spectrum CBD, they are generally made with just CBD. On the other hand, most full spectrum CBD oil tinctures are not even suitable for vaping. If you’re looking to vape full spectrum CBD, keep reading to learn more about the best CBD distillates you can get.

Why use CBD distillates?

Ideal for vaping

A good reason to use distillates is because they are perfect for vaping, which is one of the best ways to administer CBD. This is due to the higher bioavailability of direct inhalation versus other methods of cannabis consumption. Distillates are not just extremely potent, but your body is able to absorb more of it when vaporized. Some people prefer not to vape any PG/PG or artificial flavorings (aside from organic terpenes). CBD distillates are the best choice for them because they contain little to no additives. They’re about as pure as it gets.

Versatility

Aside from the overall convenience factor of vaping, another advantage of distillate is that it tends to produce very little odor, no matter how you consume it. Some people also appreciate its versatility, since distillates can be consumed in a variety of ways including vaping, dabbing or smoking.

Distillate happens to be edible and can be used for making potent CBD-infused recipes. You can actually just swallow some with a glass of cold water (to prevent it from sticking to your teeth.) Eating distillate is not as efficient as inhaling it, but the effects are longer lasting. It’s also very discreet which is great for non-vapers.

Full spectrum CBD

CBD distillate may contain some traces of other cannabinoids, but in its purest form, it lacks the terpene content that is primarily responsible for the plant’s signature aroma. So that explains why pure distillate is actually odorless and flavorless, no matter which variety of plant it was extracted from.

For this reason, some manufacturers reintroduce these terpenes back into the finished product. Distillate provides high levels of CBD while the added terpenes take care of the flavor. This also helps to facilitate “the entourage effect”, which describes the synergistic interaction between terpenes and cannabinoids. Terpenes also serve as a natural thinning agent which gives it a better consistency for use with vape cartridges that tend to have small wicking holes.

Full spectrum CBD distillate has shown more potential at providing benefits than pure CBD distillate alone. Some of the CBD distillates on this page qualify as full spectrum because they have been formulated with terpenes and cannabinoids.

These are some of the main reasons why people use CBD distillate:

  • A clean way to consume CBD
  • Extremely potent
  • Little to no odor
  • Suitable for vaping, dabbing, edibles etc.
  • Can be formulated with terpenes
  • Available in full spectrum
  • Convenient and discreet
  • No artificial additives or flavorings
  • Versatile
  • Are all CBD concentrates distillates?

No. While distillates fall into the broader category of CBD concentrates, not all concentrates are distillates. There are many other high-potency CBD concentrates like dabs, wax, shatter, rosin, live resin, etc. They utilize different extraction techniques which maintain more components from the original plant. Concentrates typically require the use of a dab pen or a regular oil rig.

CBD concentrates are often used in the production of various full spectrum CBD products including tinctures and edibles. For CBD products without THC, CBD isolate is often used. You could technically consider CBD isolate as a form of distilled CBD, since it is 99% pure. But it comes in the form of tiny crystals that can be ground into a fine white powder, not the honey-style distillate you might be thinking of.

Terpsolate is a clever solution to the lack of terpene content in CBD isolate. It contains CBD isolate but is formulated with additional terpenes. There are also broad spectrum isolates that are formulated with additional cannabinoids, which still have non-detectable levels of THC. They are a nice option for people who want high doses of CBD, without any of the THC.

These are some of the more common CBD concentrates:

    • CBD wax/dabs: Shatter, crumble, budder, rosin, live resin, etc. Extracted from hemp, contains high levels of full spectrum CBD with below 0.3% THC.
    • CBD isolate: Pure CBD crystals or powder, can be up to 99.9% pure CBD
    • Broad spectrum CBD isolate: CBD isolate infused with various cannabinoids
    • CBD Terpsolate: CBD isolate infused with various terpenes
    • Does CBD distillate get you high?

No, CBD is a non-psychoactive component of hemp, and most CBD distillate contains well below the 0.3% THC limit. CBD distillate won't get you high, but it can still provide a very relaxing and euphoric experience, depending its potency level and terpene content. THC distillate, on the other hand, is extremely psychoactive and can get you really (really) high.
