Kanger Subtank Mini Review

Kanger Subtank Mini Intro

In this article we take a look at the Kangertech Subtank Mini. This is middle sized tank in the Subtank family and features a 4.5ml tank. A lot of people were complaining (us included) about the size of the larger normal Subtank, so the mini represents a smaller option that is similar in size to the style clouds from a clearomizer Aspire Atlantis. Whereas the normal Subtank was very top heavy and didn’t fit nicely (overlaps etc) on mech mods and mini box mods, the Subtank Mini fits perfectly.

Notable Remarks

How does the Kanger Subtank Mini differ from the normal larger Subtank?

Kanger Subtank/Mini/Nano
Kanger Subtank/Mini/Nano

The Subtank mini is a lot smaller than the bigger Subtank. It is 22mm in diameter, compared to 25mm on the normal Subtank. This might not sound like a big difference, but trust me it’s makes all the difference. My issue I had with the standard Subtank was that it was very top heavy and that it didn’t fit nicely on mech mods and mini box mods (it overlapped slightly). Well the new 22mm diameter means that it sits flushly on my mech mod as well as looking stunning on any mini box mod! As it is that little bit smaller overall, it is quite a bit lighter as well, which means it has a much nicer weight balance when sitting on different devices. It is similar now to the Aspire Atlantis in size and weight.

Functionality and Performance

The best part about the Subtank Mini is that it hasn’t lost any of the great performance from its larger brother. In fact I would go as far as to say that on the RBA the performance has improved (will go into details later). They have managed to keep the same great performance whilst taking on board customer feedback, to make it smaller and lighter. The new 4.5ml sized tank, is for me absolutely perfect – not too big and enough for a good few hours of vaping. The clouds are just as ridiculous as the larger Subtank as well and the flavor is amazing. I would say though, that the vapor is slightly warmer than on the larger tank (not uncomfortably so, but some may not like it). The tank does seem to get quite warm as well, warmer than its larger brother. All in all Kanger have managed to actually make a smaller tank that performs even better!

Kit Accessories

So not only does the Mini have the same awesome performance as its older brother, it also comes with all the same great accessories that made the Subtank kit so great. The Subtank mini comes with two OCC coils (1.2ohm and 0.5ohm) and also comes with an RBA. Note the RBA on the Mini cannot be interchanged with the normal subtank as the RBA is a new and improved version!

I thought that by Kanger making the subtank smaller that it would lose some of its performance, but it has in fact managed to get even better! Kanger have adjusted the RBA and changed the build deck completely. The pre-installed coil is bigger than the old coils and it is now easier to thread new coils onto the deck. Kanger have also managed to somehow improve the airflow on the RBA, whilst at the same time fitting it in a smaller tank! The chimney is larger allowing for more airflow. Another great improvement is that when switching between the OCC coils and the RBA you do not need to remove the top of the tank and unscrew it as you did with the larger subtank. The chimney coming down from the top of the tank is now wider and fits both the OCCs and the RBA, making the whole tank even easier to use!

Overview of the improvements on the Subtank Mini over the normal Subtank

  • Smaller diameter: 22mm instead 25mm, which means it fits nicely on mech mods and mini box mods
  • Lighter in weight, so not as top heavy
  • Improved airflow options allow for a better mouth to lung setting
  • Improved RBA build deck and coils as well as bigger air flow
  • RBA and OCC coils can be interchanged more easily without having to unscrew the roof of the tank
  • RBA and OCC coils both now can use the amount of e-liquid in the tank
  • Kit also comes with a replacement pyrex glass
  • Same awesome clouds and flavour!

The fact that this kit has the same amazing performance as the larger Subtank and yet comes in a smaller better looking tank is crazy. Kanger have really listened to their customers and have made some great little improvements on the Mini, such as the improved air flow and build deck on the RBA.

This kit comes with all the same awesome accessories and different coils as the larger kit does. It even now comes with an additional pyrex glass which the larger one doesn’t.

I think this tank is far superior to the larger Subtank due to its smaller size and improved airflow options, as well as now being able to switch between the RBA and OCCs much more easily. For me personally there would be no reason to choose the bigger Subtank. If you are after a larger tank with more e-liquid capacity then perhaps the larger one is for you. The 4.5ml capacity is more than enough for me and I love how the Mini Subtank sits on my mech and mini box mods – stunning! The fact that the clouds are just as good as the larger tank as well, shows how incredible this tank really is. This is a must have for subohm vapers and for those who want a normal glassomizer tank with the possibility of moving up towards the RBA from the OCC coils.

The Aspire Atlantis has some stiff competition in this tank, as the Subtank Mini offers a lot more versatility and is the same size as the Atlantis but with a bigger tank capacity (4.5ml vs 2.5ml).

If you are unsure if you should get the Aspire Atlantis or the Kanger Subtank Mini.

Is there a way to replace just the top of the kanger mini? I’m talking about the top screw on part that the tip connects too and if so what would it be called?

I have the .5 coil on it and I don’t know how far I can turn the adjustable knob…

How do I determine how many watts and resistance on my lotus le80 with a sub tank mini

I bought the sub tank mini kit back about 6 months ago. It was working perfectly for the first couple of weeks but then it started leaking from the airflow chamber. At first I thought it was because I needed to change the coil and clean the tank but even after that the leaking problem is just getting worst, it has went from just a couple of drop to draining out more than half my tank of juice in one day. When the tank is standing up right on it own, it wouldn’t leak but it would start leaking when it screw onto the 50w battery it came in, even when it’s standing upright with the battery is turn off. My regular vape store thinks I’m crazy when I went in and told them about it. I’m currently using The uwell crown and its amazing but it would be great if there some sort of way to fix the subtank and use it as a back up or secondary.

When using the 0.5 Ohm Coil is it best to run the wattage higher? I notice it says 15 to 60w, what would you guys recommend

Alex Kendell

Hey Richie, yes you can use the 0.5 ohm coil at 15-60w but only if you have a low VG high PG liquid. Here is a chart for you:

20-40%VG 15-60 Watts

50-70%VG 15-50 Watts

80-100%VG 15-40 Watts

I brought a sub tank mini from a shop local to me but since ive had it its been leaking e-juice from the air flow valve ive look on youtube for easy fix soloutions but nothing has work then i went back to the same shop and brought a new tank but even that started leaking can you help please

Alex Kendell

Have you tried the vertical coils from the Subtank Mini V2? Are all o-rings in place? Did you screw everything in properly? Other than that I do not know why your subtanks always leak. Are you using the V2 version (Black or White?).

I have just made the commiment to give up smoking and start vaping but I have a few queries that hopefully yo ucan help me with? I have a subtank mini with a Sigelei 50w.

1. I find that even though i’m using the lowest nicotine (6mg) and have it on the lowest temperature (7W, reading 1ohm) I am finding its pretty hard on my throat – much worse that I ever remember smoking ever being, why could this be? Was I meant to swap out the pre-installed coil? – note I ensured the cotton was suffciently moist with juice before using, so I dont think it’s that – is there something else I’ve missed?

2. I sometimes see the ohms increase while taking a drag, is this normal?

Any help is appreciated.

Alex Kendell

Hey Will, 6mg for a sub ohm tank is still quite high. I would suggest using 3mg on the 0.5 ohm coil. Yes, that is normal.

The Subtank Mini ships with a pre-installed 0.5 ohm coil, so I assume that you traded that one for the 1.2 ohm coil that sits in the box. Which juice are you vaping? Many juices should be steeped first… Otherwise, they will not yield their best flavor and/or vape harshly. Also, what’s its VG/PG ratio? The more PG, the stronger the throat hit; too much PG can make the vape unpleasant.

Hey guys. I’m somewhat new to the site but I’ve been lurking for a couple months now and thought I’d share my experience with the Kanger product line. I’ve been vaping with an Eleaf istick 30w and a Kanger sub tank nano on a 0.5 ohm coil for months now. The nano has been awesome with no issues and great flavor. So yesterday I stopped by the vape shop and picked up the sub tank mini from my buddy who works there and so far it’s been awesome. Still using the 0.5 ohm coil as well but switched juice brands to the bakery vape co. The vapor and flavor is amazing however I have experienced one problem. There seems to be a small amount of leaking from underneath the bottom O-ring on the inside of the tank. This could be due to the fact that I got the last mini the shop had which also happened to be the one on display, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I’ll try to add a picture.

Here’s a picture.

Alex Kendell

Hey Josh, thanks for the picture. This seems to be quite a common problem, we had it with the old Kanger Subtank Mini. The solution for us was to just give the tank a good clean and take the glass of (carefully otherwise it will break). Dry it off with a hairdryer (not too close or the glass will shatter). Once you have done so, put all the parts back together and but a droplet of water onto the o-ring to get the glass sleeve back on. You should be good to go! Hope that helps, and if not please don’t hesitate to write back!

Will do, I will try it tonight and let you know how it goes. Thanks for the advice!

Alex Kendell

Great, no problem! Anytime.

Hey Alex, did what you said and it worked like a charm. Vaped all evening and all morning so far with no leaking under the o-ring!

Alex Kendell

Awesome, enjoy!

idk what happen i using vamo v6 on this tank with 0.5 ohm coil it doesnt make vapor or its really small then i try put it at hammer mod clone it does work but burn taste almost throw up then i put it back to vamo the coil doesnt work anymore it say low load with 0.2 ohm …. its burn out or what ? sorry im newb in vape

Alex Kendell

It might be that the coil is finished, try using a new one. If that is not the case than please let me know.

And can u look at my tank its look like more smaller than a pic u have, is this the old version one? Cuz i get it more cheaper from another vape store

Well its new one btw and teh cotton and wire still clean no burned

Alex Kendell

May I ask where you brought this Subtank from? It looks a LOT different compared to the normals subtanks we have here, is it modified in anyway?

Its not modifed i get it from my vape store in my town its they say black edition one even 2nd glass is black too

Alex Kendell

Have you tried contacting the vape shop you got it from? It looks quite modified to me and I don’t think I can help you in that case.

Purchased the Ego1 Mega a few months back. I had some issues since, issues were leaking, getting the right vape and just getting to know the product. Yesterday I purchased the Kangertech sub-tank Mini and using with the Mega one battery. Wow what a difference cleaner hit and enjoying it.

Alex Kendell

Great news, enjoy!

I can get my kbox mod and my subtank mini to work, the battery is fully charged and it still doesn’t work. Pls help

Chris Kendell

Hi Salaar. I’d recommend speaking to the shop you purchased it from if it still isn’t working.

At what temp can you smoke the kanger temp control coils at?

got the subtank mini but am having trouble using it as it seems to get ridiculously hot from the very first inhale (can’t really inhale properly cause it burns my throat for some reason). Thought it needed a new coil so i changed it but kept having the same issue. Pretty sure my battery settings are ok. My previous vape was a nautilus. Any ideas as to what i might be doing wrong?

Chris Kendell

Make sure you are firing it at the recommended wattage Dino. What device are you using and what wattage are you firing at? Also make sure that air flow is open.

Currently at 15w(istick 30w). Eliquid 12mg (maybe i should use a 6?)

Chris Kendell

15W shouldn’t be getting too hot at all. I would recommend with a sub ohm tank that use use less nicotine than you would be used to on the Nautilus mini, as you will get through much more e-juice. However that shouldn’t affect the heat. What coil are you using and are you making sure the air flow is open? Also make sure there is no leaking at the bottom of the coil contact as sometimes the leaking can cause the device to misread the resistance. This happened to us on a few sub ohm tanks.

Chris Kendell

Shouldn’t be getting that hot on those coils at 15W. It will be a warmer vape than a nautilus mini, but with the air flow open, it shouldn’t be as hot as you described. Try another device perhaps if you have one and if it is still doing it, then you know its the tank and coils and can take them back. It could be the iStick playing up as they have had a few issues. Hope you manage to fix it Dino!

The Kanger mini was my first choice after moving up from a pen vape. I got the subbox combo with the battery and tank. First week it was great, I loved the flavor and the clouds I was getting out of it. But after a week I started getting a burnt taste and losing flavor. I purchased some new OCC coils for it and afterward had nothing but problems. I’m not sure if it was due to lack of experience or if i got a pack of bad coils but I had no flavor and all kinds of leakage but still had clouds. Not trying to bad mouth Kanger, the design is great and my GF is still using the battery box for her aspire but I got frustrated with the tank and it’s now sitting on a shelf.

I cant make a choise between subtank mini and Aspire Atlantis 2 for my sigelei 150w, but after saw your review about subtank mini,i finally made up my mind and plan to buy one from , recommended by one of my friends, hope it will give me a perfect vaping experience.

This is a best atomizer from kangertech, but i think tis is a good looking device too from kangertech. Can hardly wait and grab it

So… I’ve been researching for hours I’ve been up all night I’m still kinda new to the vape industry..I wonder if anyone can help me out… I got the kanger tech sub tank mini and I currently have a vamo v3 (which is a non sub ohm battery) and I’ve tryed multiple times with the rba to up my ohms…but I feel like a idiot cuz its not working…can i not bump up my ohms to like a 1.5 or 1.2 on rba for my vamo?..please help me out I’m so frustrated

subtonic mini was really great tank. I was looking for replacement for my old Aspire Nautilus that broken right on rubber parts with n spare-parts available in the market
