Innokin iSub Intro
In this review we take a look at the brand new Innokin isub sub ohm tank. We have reviewed countless sub ohm tanks now, so were excited to see what Innokin could offer in the sub ohm tank market! The iSub is by far the most affordable sub ohm tank on the market.
The Innokin Isub looks completely different to any other sub ohm tank we have reviewed so far and features a unique German made polycarbonate bell shaped tank. Apparently the polycarbonate is a lot less prone to smashing when being dropped and so far so good on ours! The iSub is also a very well thought through little sub ohm tank and features a no spill coil swapping system, which I will talk about below.
There is also the Innokin isub G, which comes with a Pyrex glass tank, for those who don’t like the German PC tank. We will be uploading that review shortly as well.

Using the iSub 0.5ohm Japanese Cotton Coil
We used the iSub on our new IPV4 box mod. As with all our sub ohm tank reviews, we used our favorite high VG e-liquid – Fa-Q Miss Samoa, which is a 75% VG e-juice which tastes of cookies and cream (absolutely delicious!). Check out our Fa-Q e-liquid review and save 18% on those e-juices with our custom FA-Q coupon code.
20W – Already at 20W there is pretty decent flavor and pretty massive clouds. The vapor is however on the cooler side.
30W – Nice flavor and huge clouds with a slightly warmer vape. The vapor is however not as warm as something like the Subtank Mini at this wattage and the drip tip stays nice and cool.
35W – For me I preferred the vapor at 35W, as the vapor was a little warmer and I found the flavor more pronounced than at 20-30W. This was our sweet spot for this tank and 0.5ohm coil.
40W – Innokin don’t recommend this wattage for these coils, but I’ll try anyway. I can feel a dry hit coming on at this wattage, so I wouldn’t really try the iSub at this wattage. Stick to 35W and below for a nice enjoyable sub ohm vape.
Ridiculously Affordable Price
This is one of the biggest selling points on the Innokin iSub tank. You can currently get it on sale at VaporDNA for just $12.99 (24/05/2015 – not sure how long this will last), which is miles cheaper than any other sub ohm tank on the market. The coils are also very cheap at just $8.99 for 5 replacement coils. This makes the iSub the most affordable sub ohm vape we have come across. Whilst it is a very cheap price the tank itself is actually very well thought through and doesn’t feel cheap. Some people think the German PC tank feels cheap, but actually I don’t mind it whatsoever and it is less prone to smashing when being dropped!
Massive Dual Airflow Slots
The airflow on the iSub is right up there with the Atlantis V2 when it comes to air flow and features two 12mm by 3mm airflow slots. The airflow slots are easy to adjust and provide something for everyone.
No Spill Coil Swap System
This is a really unique feature that we haven’t come across on the other sub ohm tanks. When swapping a coil you can unscrew the most bottom part of the tank and then pop the coil out without any/much leakage at all. It is a much cleaner way to replace coils on the bottom filled tanks and a very nice unique feature that saves you getting your fingers completely drenched in e-liquid.
German Made Polycarbonate Bell Shaped Tank
This will come down to personal preference and at the beginning I was slightly concerned about the German PC tank. I thought it would be a lot more prone to smashing than normal Pyrex glass. However, we have been informed that it is in fact a lot more durable than Pyrex when it comes to smashing. We actually tried dropping it on the floor and surprisingly it didn’t crack (I wouldn’t recommend trying this though as there is no replacement tank!) I have also come to quite like the aesthetics of the bell shaped tank, which I wasn’t the biggest fan of at the beginning.
Horizontal Coils with Plenty of Airflow
The airflow on the coils is also very good with plenty of space at the bottom for air to come through the coil. The coil itself
is a horizontal coil build like on the Kanger Subtanks. The two juice flow holes are not the biggest, but don’t have any issues with wicking high VG e-liquids. We were running a 75% VG e-liquid with no issues.
The coils also have a mesh cover which I am assuming is to provide some protection against spit-back. The coils in general have a solid and quality look and feel to them and look to be well built. I can’t comment on rebuilding them, as we struggled to take the coil apart.
Good Flavor and Big Clouds
The clouds even at 25W are pretty massive on this tank and it will get through a lot of e-juice. Be careful if you are new to sub ohm tanks and be sure to use an e-liquid with less nicotine then you are used to, as you will be getting through a lot more e-liquid than on a normal clearomizer.
The flavor was not bad at all on the 0.5ohm coil, which features Japanese organic cotton as wicking material. What surprised me most was how fast the coils wicked straight out of the box and that the flavor was pretty much there after a few puffs. With some of the other sub ohm coils we have come across you sometimes need to get through a whole or half a tank, before the coils really start working well, but with the iSub the flavor was there very quickly.
For such an affordable tank I wasn’t expecting the world when it came to flavor, but I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t up there with the likes of the Crown, Herakles and Freemax Starre, but it was a pleasant sub ohm vape at a lower wattage, great for those with 50W or 30W devices.
Easy To Take Apart
The iSub itself is very easy to take apart fully and clean. I mentioned the easy coil swap system which works well, but the whole tank also comes apart with ease, meaning you can give it a good clean and then put it back together easily.
Difficult to Fill the Tank Up Fully
The tank can’t be filled up fully, so the tank always looks 1/3 empty or 2/3 full, whichever way you want to look at it! It has a 4ml capacity compared with a 4.5ml capacity on the iSub G. When you get down to the last few ml’s of e-liquid, you also can’t see how much e-juice you have left in the tank, as it is hidden below the metal rim. You can quickly flip the tank upside down to see how much you have left, but that’s not very convenient. These are deal breakers in my opinion, but being able to fill it fully would give you an extra ml of e-liquid which you can always do with on these juice guzzling tanks!
Only a 0.5ohm Coil
So far there is only the 0.5ohm coil for the iSub tank that I have come across. They might be bringing out more later, but at the moment only having the one coil is slightly limited in my opinion. A lot of the sub ohm tanks have 2-3 different ohm coils to choose from, so only having one coil is somewhat limiting.
Not Many Accessories in the iSub Kit
I can’t really complain about not getting a replacement tank or an instruction manual in the iSub kit, as you do have to remember it is priced at just $12.99, but it is something to bear in mind.
There is no RBA section for this tank or for the iSub G that we have yet come across and do not know if Innokin are planning to do one. This could be a downside for some people.
We were not expecting a lot to be perfectly honest given this tanks price. However, we were pleasantly surprised and its performance is right up there with the more expensive sub ohm tanks. It is a no fuss, well thought through tank with some nice unique features that you don’t get on the other sub ohm tanks. For just $12.99 ($11.7 with our coupon code below), it is a no brainer for those looking for a sub ohm tank that tastes great and is easy to use. The iSub will also work well on a 30W or 50W device, so you won’t need a big 100W or 150W box for this tank. We liked it best at 35W, so a 50W box mod like the Vaporfi Vox 2 or iStick 50W will be a great combo with this. The new Innokin MVP3 Pro will also be a great combo and those who have the original Innokin MVP3 can also use that and it will work very well at 30W.
Overall there was little to complain about the iSub sub ohm tank by Innokin and for its ridiculously low price tag it is the perfect sub ohm tank for those on a budget. It isn’t up there flavor wise with some of the other sub ohm tanks, but I wasn’t expecting it to be for its price and to be fair it isn’t actually that far off some of the much more expensive sub ohm tanks in terms of flavor and clouds.
