Vapers: Here’s a Survey That Can Help Us Win Our Fight

British researcher launches a survey of US vapers and an inspiring YouTube channel

We Want Your Feedback

Vapers can help influence legislation and regulations that affect us by participating in a survey being conducted by a UK researcher. The United States Vapers’ Survey has already been promoted by CASAA, Not Blowing Smoke and ECF. Now Vaping360 would like to also encourage our readers to take part.

The survey is being conducted by Christopher Russell, PhD, a psychologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Substance Use Research in Glasgow, Scotland. It is being funded by Fontem Ventures, although they have had no input on the design of the study or interpretation of the results. According to Dr. Russell, the study team hopes for 25,000 responses, and they’re currently just over halfway to that goal.

He intends to offer the results to US legislators and regulators “as evidence of how real people actually use nicotine vapor products.” Because we as vapers are asking Congress to act to prevent the FDA’s deeming regulations from destroying the vapor products market, it will be important to have reliable scientific data on how adult consumers use those products.

“At this time, more than ever before,” says Russell, “it is critical that the FDA, and more so members of Congress who will ultimately vote on regulations, be presented with data about why people vape, what they vape, how lives are being changed by vaping, and so, what benefits might be lost to millions of people if nicotine vapor products are regulated unfairly and disproportionately. It is important that vapers spare 10 minutes to help us put these data in front of legislators.”

The survey is well-designed and easy to take. I did it myself in about ten minutes, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the questions actually made sense. Many similar surveys have suffered from lack of input from vapers. This one obviously had been reviewed by people who understand what it is that we do, and the language we use.

Meanwhile, on YouTube. . .

In addition to his surveys of vapers, Dr. Russell has started a YouTube channel that we are huge fans of. Vapers Helping Smokers to Quit is a collection of videos of vapers telling their stories.

Hey, call us biased, but nothing is more exciting than listening to vapers talking about how they improved their lives and the lives of their families by leaving cigarettes behind. Nothing could help us more in our fight against the FDA’s attempt to ban vaping than getting these inspiring stories to spread on social media and influencing some non-vapers to join us.

I spend most of my time studying the regulatory, legislative and scientific challenges to vaping, advocating for our right to exist, and talking with others who do the same. Consider me a source for information, and feel free to agree or disagree with anything I say. I love good coffee and sweet Michigan cherries. My childhood hero was Gordie Howe.
