What are the benefits of CBD oil for dogs?

The body of information within the scientific community on cannabidiol, especially regarding dogs, is still very narrow but the research is starting to catch up with the many personal experiences and customer reviews from pet owners around the world.

A study from 2018 documented improvement for the following conditions with dogs:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Phobia
  • Motion Sickness
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures

The available scientific data supports the benefits of CBD oil for man’s best friend, though it’s not robust. The good news is that most of the current research has been conducted primarily on animals and rodents. That gives us an indication as to how it will do with dogs and other pets. The Hemp Farm Bill was introduced in 2018, so we will start seeing more clinical trials conducted on CBD and hemp-based products for dogs.

CBD oil vs hemp oil: which is best for a canine?

You might be wondering “What’s the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil?”. More importantly “Which is better for your four-legged companion?”. Most CBD oils on the market are derived from hemp and are properly categorized as CBD oil. Hemp oil, on the other hand, is another word for hemp seed oil which is very different from CBD oil.

Some full spectrum CBD oils contain minimal THC content, generally under the legal limit of 0.3%, which is not enough to get your furry friend high. If you would like to avoid THC altogether, there are THC-free CBD oils made with CBD isolate, a concentrated form of CBD that contains no THC at all.

CBD, as opposed to THC, is a non-psychoactive. It has been shown in clinical trials on rodents, canines and people to have potential benefits for multiple conditions. There are various types of CBD products for pets, like edibles and creams, but oral tinctures are the best way to administer CBD to your dog according to scientific research.

In a 1998 study from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, researchers tested the effectiveness of oil tinctures compared to other formulations including edibles and topicals: “Pharmacokinetic analysis demonstrated that the CBD-infused oil formulation resulted in higher maximal concentrations and systemic exposure than the other 2 formulations”

Only give your furry companion CBD oil that has been tested by a credible lab, and made by a reputable company. All of the CBD oils on this page are hemp-based and have been tested by independent labs. Your dog deserves the highest standard of quality!

How much CBD oil should I give my dog?

cbd oil for dogs dosage chart

The biggest problem with CBD dosages, is that there is no one-size-fits-all, especially for pets! Dogs come in many shapes and sizes, and each will require a different dosage depending on what you are looking to achieve. Some CBD oil brands have strength options for small, medium or large canines. All you need to know is the amount of CBD in one mL of CBD oil, and then you can work out the rest from there. Start with the minimal recommended dose, and gradually work your way up until you are getting the results you’re looking for. Once you find the optimal dose for your furry friend, stick with it and follow a consistent regimen, twice a day. Knowing how many mg of CBD is in each dropper’s worth (1 mL) of CBD oil is essential for you to know exactly how much CBD your dog is getting.

The 2018 study published in Front Vet Sci. shows positive results with doses between 75-150 mg of CBD per day, but these are considerably high doses, even for human standards. Other studies administered 2 mg CBD for every 1 kg of bodyweight, which converts to roughly 1 mg per lb. Keep in mind that administering your canine CBD oil drops of CBD oil directly is going to be more effective than putting it in their food due to the higher bioavailability of sublingual tinctures.

Here is a general guide for determining your dog’s ideal CBD dosage. Think of it as a rule of thumb or starting point. Your dog might require a lot more or less CBD oil. Speak to your vet before giving your dog CBD oil, especially if they are already taking any medication.

Strengths

  • Low dose: 0.1 mg/lb
  • Medium dose: 0.25 mg/lb
  • High dose: 0.5 mg/lb

Administer CBD oil to your dog twice a day. If you only know your dog’s weight in kg, simply divide your dog’s weight in kg by 2.2 to convert it to pounds.

What are the side effects of CBD oil for dogs?

In that 2018 study from Front Vet Sci. conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of CBD oil for dogs. “…at both doses and no observable side effects. Clinically, canine brief pain inventory and Hudson activity scores showed a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with CBD oil. Veterinary assessment showed decreased pain during CBD treatment. No side effects were reported by owners…”

An additional study from 2018, also published in Front Vet Sci., showed that 95% of all participants did not experience any side effects. “The significant side effect observed most frequently was lethargy yet even this effect was reported by only 3.9% of owners.”

Although a lot more research still needs to be done, but there is not a lot of evidence that CBD oil has significant side effects when administered to canines. Even in humans, there are not many side effects associated with cannabidiol oil, especially in comparison to prescription and over-the-counter alternatives. Be sure to speak to your vet about possible drug interactions if your furry companion is currently on any medication.

“Given the positive feelings expressed by veterinarians in this study, it is suggested that all those affected by both the potential benefits as well as the risks, work together for legislative change that would allow for the expansion of knowledge needed to best capitalize on this potential medical tool for companion animals.” Front Vet Sci., 2018

Within the next year we should be seeing some interesting research coming out about the effects of CBD oil for dogs. Stay tuned and best of luck to your four-legged friends.
