Product intro and specs

The Famovape Magma mod is the latest mod from manufacturer Famovape. They are a pretty small and new company with not a lot of products to date. I’ve actually reviewed a couple of them in the past, the Yup RDA and the Fat Baby Mesh tank. Outside of that the only other products they have made is a mod called the Bit Box, and the Fat Baby Mesh kit.

The Magma is a dual 18650 battery mod rated at 200 watts with a color screen and their new ‘V-Tek” chip. The color Options are plentiful as well. There are two frame color options, black and gold, and twelve resin panel options to pick from. The one I received is the gold frame with the “galaxy” resin which is a mixture of orange and blue.
This product was sent to me free of charge from Famovape for the purpose of this review.

Price: $39.95 (discontinued)
Colors: Black or gold frame, 12 resin panel options

First impressions

Famovape Magma Mod | Test Results Are In

When I first got this mod, I liked the design a lot. I’m going to make a comparison that I’ll make a lot throughout this review, but it reminded me a lot of the Voopoo Drag 2 mod. It looks and feels very similar to it. One thing they state on the box is that it’s the smallest dual-battery mod on the market. I wouldn’t say that is true (that would probably be the Eleaf Invoke) but this is one of the smallest for sure. It’s very compact and comfy. I also liked the screen, and the resin panels are great too. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the first mod from Famovape that I’ve used.

Build quality and design

Famovape Magma Mod | Test Results Are In

The Famovape Magma Mod is a mostly nicely built and designed mod. It reminds me a lot of the Voopoo Drag 2 in its shape and style and is quite comfortable to hold in the hand. It’s a simple rounded off rectangle-shaped mod with a front facing screen. Where it differs greatly from the Drag 2 though is that it has resin panels on both sides, which is making the Magma a much nicer looking mod in my opinion. It has a good weight to it as well, not heavy but feels solid. The gold frame itself looks great and shows no signs of wear and has a flat finish to it. There is also a small “Magma” logo on the frame that gets cut into the resin panel. Nice simple branding there and much nicer looking then the giant Drag logo.

The battery door is a standard magnetic side plate. It’s a solid metal door with a resin panel on the outside. Without batteries, it fits great with no play on it. With batteries on there is a little play that is very minor as the batteries stick out very slightly past the tray. They should have made the mod a little bigger or cut out a little bit more on the door itself to accommodate that. Thankfully, it’s nowhere near as bad as the battery door play on the Drag 2 and most people probably won’t even notice it. The screen is a nice size and bright color rectangular screen. It’s not full color but has a black background and color font which you can change – there are four options (blue, red, yellow, green).

There is some button rattle on this mod, but it’s only the up button on mine and it’s pretty minor. The fire and down buttons have no rattle. Not a major deal but worth a mention. The 510 pin is great and gave me no issues with any atomizer. It is not centered, but it is flat and fits flush. It can handle a 25 mm atomizer without overhang. The USB port is on the front bottom right below the adjustment buttons. I don’t recommend charging batteries internally in mods with removable batteries (especially with multiple battery mods as I’ve seen it be the issue for many failures) but I checked the charge rate briefly and it charges around 1.6 amps. They list a 2-amp charge rate, so close enough, but closer to 1.5 amps. Still, external charging would be the way to go and this is for informational purposes only.

Features and functions

Famovape Magma Mod | Test Results Are In

The Famovape Magma has most of the modes we see on mods these days. You have Power mode (watts), Bypass Mode, and Temp control mode for Ni200, Ti, and SS. No TCR mode, but the TCR is adjustable in each of the preset modes. It uses the standard TCR system as well, which is great.
All the needed features we expect to find in a regulated mod are there, so that’s nice. It does lack some of the “extra” features we see in some mods, like a voltage mode, preheat options, or a watt curve mode. I do feel that they could have included a preheat setting, as it has become pretty much standard these days.

Using the Famovape Magma

As far as usage goes, they have a simple and easy to use menu system.

  • Five clicks of the fire button to turn on and off
  • Three clicks to enter the menu
  • Use up and down to select your mode in the menu
  • Press fire to accept
  • When picking a TC mode, it’ll ask you to set the TCR
  • + and fire to lock the mod (locks adjustment buttons only, can still fire)
  • Two clicks of the fire button to adjust watts in TC mode

No surprises there, just a very intuitive menu to navigate.

Power mode performance

Testing on this mod was done with Sony VTC5A Batteries. They list the specs at 200 watts, 7.5 volts and 40 amps. I couldn’t find these on their site, but they list all three in the manual so that’s great. During my testing, the max achieved wattage was 199, so excellent rating at 200 watts. The amp limit I got was 39, which is average for dual-18650 battery mods these days and right in line with their 40-amp rating as well. The volt limit I got with a 0.62-ohm coil was 7.363 V which shows there is no boost circuit like most dual-battery mods on the market, and is also right in line with their 7.5-volt rating, so well done there.

The mod adjusts in 1-watt increments, which I like that a lot better than 0.1-watt increments, and it scrolls pretty fast. During my testing the mod did a great job of not getting hot. It’s a very accurate mod. I actually went back and looked at my testing on the Drag 2 and the results are eerily similar with a slight edge to the Magma. It also has a built in hard preheat to it and fires very fast giving the “instant coil sizzle” we get from many fast firing mods like the Drag 2 or Vaporesso mods. Putting on a new coil auto sets the wattage based on coil resistance. Overall a really good performer in power mode that is accurate, fires fast, and meets their listed specs very well. You can see the full test results below.

Temperature control mode performance

Using SS316L wire in SS mode, I tested six builds:

  • One simple round single coil
  • One simple round dual coil
  • Two fancy wire single-coil builds
  • One fancy wire dual-coil build

I set the TCR to 092 as it should be for SS316 wire. They do have a watt limit of 80 watts like the Drag 2 however. I’m not sure why either. It made sense years ago, but nowadays many affordable companies do a good temp control and don’t have any extra limit on the power for temp control mode. However, unlike the Drag 2, the Magma gives you the full 80 watts in TC mode at any resistance within its limits. So it wasn’t nearly as limiting for builds as the Drag 2 is, and was able to work well with all my builds, save for the really massive one that needed 100+ watts.

With that said the temp control performance on this mod is surprisingly good and accurate. I get a nice warm vape in the 430-460 F range. Ramp up is good, throttle is smooth, and it fires consistently. Dry hit protection is also great. Really surprisingly good TC performance and right up there with the best affordable TC mods on the market like the Nova, Proton, Luxe, Naboo etc.

Pros / Cons

  • Solid build quality
  • Good paint job
  • Nice resin panels
  • Good TC performance
  • Accurately rated for volts/watts/amps
  • Good power mode performance
  • Handles 25 mm atomizers without overhang
  • Simple and easy to use menu
  • Battery door is easy to open and swap out batteries
  • Nice and bright large color screen
  • Practical size and shape
  • Tons of color options
  • Affordable price
  • Temp control is limited to 80 watts
  • Slight button rattle (only on one button)
  • Slight battery door play
  • No preheat options in power mode

Verdict

Famovape did a great job with this mod. There are a few minor cons on it, but overall, it’s a small affordable mod that looks and performs great. I know I compared this a lot to the Drag 2 and for good reason. For all intents and purposes, this is a better version of the Drag 2 and really the mod Voopoo should have made. Power performance wise the two are so close nobody would notice a difference. But the Magma uses a standard TC system, doesn’t come with a giant logo, and has a nice bright color screen instead of the small and dim black and white one on the Drag 2. No gap due to a raised 510 and no paint issues as well, and the battery door play isn’t nearly as bad.

So, I guess what I’m trying to say here is this: if you are a fan of the Drag mods and were looking to upgrade from the original Drag, you’d be much better off with a Magma. Outside of that, if you were just in the market for a dual 18650 mod this one is well worth the look. Let me know what you think in the comments!

I started doing reviews at the end of 2016 bringing a unique amount of data and fair points that has made them grow in popularity. I’m an avid temp control vaper but will vape pretty much any style of vaping. My goal is to bring as much good, fair, and unbiased information to the forefront as I can to aid vapers in making informed decisions to get the best vape for their style. I enjoy helping people really get the most out of their vape and finding their “aha” moment when it all clicks into place.

Great review. Thank you. I don’t think I’ve ever used a mod in power mode over 80w. Never really utilizing TC can I assume that I wouldn’t need that mode to go over 80w should I attempt to?

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the kind words. TC mode needs to be used with certain wires only i’d recommend reading a guide to TC to further understand it if you wanted to give ti a try. We have a good guide here on the site https://vaping360.com/best-vape-mods/temperature-control/

it sucks I have the famovape 4 months and the top where the tank screws in is loose the screws keep turning doesn’t tighten the tank wobbles. I let all my friends know to stay away from this company. Of course the warranty is good for 90 days because it falls apart on the 91st day!!!!!!
