The Kandypens CRYSTAL is a top-of-the-line vape pen kit for herbal concentrates like wax, shatter, or isolates. It can be used with THC or CBD concentrates. The 900 mAh pen has adjustable voltage and an optional automatic session mode, and it powers a quartz wax atomizer with smooth and open airflow. Different from typical quartz atomizers with coil-wrapped rods, the CRYSTAL bowl is seated above the heating element. That means “crystal” clear flavor is automatic! And since no coil will ever touch your concentrate, cleaning is a breeze and the atomizer will last.
Everything you need to take your dabs on the go is included. Out of the box, you can be up and running in seconds flat… as long as you have some concentrate. Here’s what’s included:
The main kit is comprised of the pen, atomizer and mouthpiece. The CRYSTAL comes in either black or white. The mouthpiece and atomizer are also sold separately, but to get the pen you have to buy the entire kit.
The Crystal is essentially a three-part unit: the vape pen battery, the quartz atomizer, and the mouthpiece. Including the mouthpiece, the CRYSTAL stands only 10 cm x 2 cm (a little less than an inch in diameter, and just over four inches tall), making it look like a mini sub ohm vape.
The CRYSTAL is a button operated vape pen. It has a few features worth noting:
The pen functions well. I’ve been using mine with oil carts and even MTL vape tanks. The only issue I have with it is that the button feels dead on one side. I have two CRYSTAL kits and it’s mostly on one of them. Having said that, I’ve never gotten a misfire when I intended to take a hit.
The CRYSTAL quartz atomizer is the star of the show here. Although the quartz crystal bowl is hard to see in pictures, it’s a full bowl seated above the stove-top heating element. That coil you see in pictures will never touch or char your concentrate! It’s a super-simple atomizer to learn and use, yet it comes with several useful features inherent to its design:
Using the CRYSTAL is easy and straightforward. Simply load up to 0.1 grams of your concentrate into the atomizer, and screw on the mouthpiece. Then turn on the device with a quick five-click of the button.
To change your power settings, press the button quickly three times and wait for the LED to change. If you think you see two green settings, know that the yellow looks a bit like green.
To operate the sesh mode, all it takes is a quick two-click of the button. The device will power itself and all you have to do is take a hit. The sesh mode lasts 10 seconds, and afterwards you can activate it again or go back to taking hits with your button.
The CRYSTAL has stunning performance for concentrates. It heats quickly and evenly. And that airflow is sublime, making each hit smooth and pleasurable. So far, I’ve used over three grams of cannabis wax, and close to a gram of CBD isolate. With each type of concentrate I’ve tried, I’ve gotten stellar flavor. The best setting for flavor is subjective, but I like it on its top two settings — 3.6 V (red) and 4.2 V (blue). But no matter the heat settings, flavor chasers will be satisfied.
With a load of about 0.1 grams, I can get a few good sessions of multiple hits. If I keep the voltage down to the bottom two settings of 2.6 V (yellow) and 3.0 V (green) I can squeeze in another session.
The vapor is wispy at lower temps and fuller at the higher settings, but this device isn’t meant to win a cloud competition. At the higher settings, you’ll also shorten your overall extraction times and the atomizer may start getting warm (though not something out of the ordinary). But the effects will be most intense at the higher settings, which is the main reason why I keep mine at those temps. That said, if I’m using a CBD isolate, I’ll stick to the lower voltages.
On a full battery, I can easily get a day of vaping without needing a charge. I can comfortably leave the house and not have to worry about the battery dying. And if by chance I didn’t get to leave with a full charge and it does die, it comes with pass-thru charging so I can use it while it charges.
On the pen, there’s a row of four vertical LEDs that glow and correspond to the charge status. The lights glow when you take a hit. When all four are illuminated, it’s a full battery, and when three are lit, there’s ¾ of a charge left, so on and so forth.
Because the CRYSTAL atomizer uses a quartz bowl, cleaning it couldn’t be easier. I recommend cleaning after each use, especially if you’re going to reload, but sometimes that’s not practical considering you may be out and about. Whenever you can clean it, follow these simple steps to get the bowl looking new again and it will last you for a long time without needing to be replaced:
1. Turn on the device and fire it for a few seconds, liquifying the material
2. Take a napkin and wipe out the inside of the bowl, removing the liquified concentrate
3. Use a high-strength isopropyl alcohol-soaked napkin (or similar) and wipe out the bowl
4. Let it dry a few minutes before use
Note: if by chance you overloaded your bowl and some concentrate got in the bottom of the shower-head splash guard, unscrew it with a flat-head screwdriver and soak with iso (there’s a little slot for removal with a screwdriver). Clean the small holes with a brush and iso, then put it back in the mouthpiece.
Without a doubt, the CRYSTAL is a high-quality vape pen kit for concentrates. I recommend it to anyone that likes vaping concentrates on the go, and especially for lovers of pure flavor. Of course, if you’re just looking to get ripped, the CRYSTAL can do that too!
It looks good as most Kandypens designs do, and it’s made of quality materials. There’s no glues or nasty stuff from the manufacturing like cheap devices often have. But there’s a trade-off. For a quality pen kit with a lifetime warranty on the battery, you’re going to pay a premium. The kit retails for $134.97. Luckily, the CRYSTAL atomizer ($34.95) and mouthpiece ($9.95) can be purchased separately and used on other 510-threaded pens if the kit’s price tag is out of your budget.
