Industry advocates in New Jersey report that state bills banning flavored vaping products will be heard Thursday in committee meetings in both the Assembly and the Senate. Once they pass out of those committees, they can be voted into law by the full Assembly and Senate. They must be stopped in committee.
Gov. Phil Murphy has already indicated his support for a flavor ban. So if the ban passes the legislature, he will sign it into law. Most New Jersey vapers are well aware that they have barely avoided flavor bans the last two years, and that the governor wants a ban.
New Jersey vapers need to take action today and Wednesday to have any hope of stopping the flavor ban juggernaut. CASAA’s call to action (linked below) offers an easy way to email your Assembly member and senator. Please do it today!
It’s also important to contact the committee members by phone Tuesday and Wednesday—before the Thursday meetings. The call to action linked above includes names, phone numbers, and talking points, but the key thing is to explain your own experience—how flavored vaping products have impacted your life.
Tell the senators that you oppose S.3265, and the assembly members that you oppose A.3178, because the bills will prevent other smokers from having access to the same products that helped you.
American Vaping Association President Gregory Conley (a New Jersey resident) has identified three legislators who may be especially important to contact. You still need to contact your own legislators (using the CASAA contact form), and call the committee members—but these three need special attention:
If you’re able to attend one or both of the meetings Thursday in Trenton, please do. It’s very important to produce a huge crowd to remind the legislators that a flavor ban affects real New Jersey citizens—their constituents. You may speak against the ban if you choose to, but even if you don’t, filling all the seats with vapers sends a powerful message.
