Product intro and specs

The VOOPOO VINCI Spark220 is the latest dual-18650 mod from VOOPOO. It's the follow-up to the VINCI Spark 100, which was a single-18650 battery mod rated at 100 watts. VOOPOO really burst onto the vape scene many years ago with their original DRAG and were mostly hit or miss for a while, despite being really popular. They have drastically improved over the years and have been making many good products in a row recently. It’s actually been quite a while since I reviewed one that was a miss, so they seem to have really grown from a hype company pumping out products to a quality-first vape manufacturer.

The VINCI Spark220 kit is a fully-fledged dual-18650 battery mod and sub ohm tank kit. The mod is rated for a 220-watt output, and the tank in their kit is the UFORCE-X tank, which is the same tank that came in the DRAG 5 kit. I won't be covering the tank in this review, but you can find all the information about it in my review of the DRAG 5.

Pods and disposables have taken over the market, so I am happy to review a mod kit for a change. Keep reading to find out how the Spark220 performs.

Price: TBA (at Element Vape)
Colors: Spring green, tech silver, rose red, dark red, midnight black, space blue, starlit blue

First impressions

The VINCI Spark220 has a unique futuristic style; the large and bright color LED screen and the illuminating front and back panels—with lights dancing around like stars lighting up in the sky—give it a very distinctive look.

The button is a dial that you rotate to adjust and press to fire. The diamond texture on the dial feels good and gives grip, while the end itself is soft to feel better when pressed. It’s a nice touch. The battery door was great, and it was easy to load and swap batteries. The lock slider is a nice touch, as I always appreciate those as well.

Overall the mod feels and looks like a throwback to when companies were trying to make innovative-looking mods, which is something I really appreciate.

Build quality and design

The Spark220 feels great in the hand. It’s a really well-built and great-looking mod. It definitely feels like it could take some accidental damage and keep ticking. The device is operated using only the rotating button. and then the lock slider on the opposite side of the button.

On the left side at the bottom is the USB-C port. The front of the mod has a large and bright color LED screen. I couldn’t find a listing of the size anywhere, but using a digital caliper, I got about a 1.4” diagonal corner to corner, so it's a really good size.

The 510 pin is completely centered, which is great. The battery door is a standard magnetic backplate. It fits great with no wiggle; the magnets are strong enough to hold it in place, but it also can be pulled off easily. The battery door has a protective coating on the inside, along with a warning to use 25A or higher discharge batteries.

I recevied two out of the six available color options: dark red and space blue. The space blue is a solid blue color similar to the blue of the Spark 100. The dark red starts as a dark red on top and fades down to black on the bottom. The coloring looks great and has a matte finish that doesn’t fingerprint at all. And, as I mentioned earlier, the illuminated star-like panel is impressive.

The branding is all discreet and well done, so I'm happy to see they’ve gone away from the outlandish branding in their older mods.

Features and functions

The VOOPOO VINCI Spark220 has three modes: Smart, RBA, and TC-TCR. The industry has seemed to shift away from temperature control and more complicated mods in favor of simpler mods, pods, and AIOs, so it is nice to still see some companies making temp control options for the vapers that still use it. Unfortunately, temp control on the Spark220 is not up to par, but more on that in the Performance section of the review.

Smart mode is just power mode that doesn't let you overpower your coils. For example, with the 0.15-ohm coil, the mod won’t let me go over 80 watts in Smart mode. RBA is just basic power mode. Both modes set the wattage for the recommended watts when attaching your atomizer to it. I would have preferred some options in power mode since smart and RBA are basically the same. Either a watt curve or preheat option.

TC-TCR is temperature control mode with four preset settings for wire types: Ni200, Ti, SS316, and SS430. I think nowadays, the best settings would be Ti and SS316, followed by a TCR mode for a manually inputted value. Nobody really uses Ni200 anymore, and SS430 never got popular. SS316 is the common go-to for temp control vaping for the small number of vapers that still use it.

Finally, the lock slider is programmable via the menu. You can either lock the whole device or just lock the setting (it can still be fired.) I love that, but I prefer to keep it on "lock device" mode to prevent pocket firing.

Using the VINCI Spark220 mod

The VOOPOO VINCI Spark220 basic operations are as follows:

  • Click fire five times to turn the device on/off
  • Use the dial to adjust wattage (or temperature in TC)
  • Click fire three times to enter the menu
  • In TC mode: click fire twice to change from F to C

In the menu, you can adjust the mode, program the lock slider, reset your puffs, turn the lights and animations on or off, change the theme, and enter a battery evaluator.

For themes, there are three options; the symbols look like a sun, a comet, and a star. The sun has a basic layout on a black screen, the star has an animated circle around the wattage setting, and the comet has a colorful background and an animation around the watt setting. All three show resistance, puffs, and individual battery meters with percentages.

The battery evaluator is supposed to give a pass/fail test of your batteries if you have the 0.15-ohm coil in the UFORCE-X tank on the mod. I don’t have any bad batteries, so all mine passed when I used the feature. I'm not sure how that works and what method they use to evaluate the batteries, but it only takes a few seconds and gives you a green check for each battery or a red X if it’s bad. There isn’t enough information on how it works on their site or in the manual for me to trust this feature. I’d be happier if they explained how it tests the batteries and what it decides is bad before recommending anyone put any stock in it. I like the idea of it, and I'm not saying it’s bad; just saying we need more information on it.

Power mode performance

Testing on this mod was done with Sony VCT5A batteries. They only list two max outputs; watts at 220 and volts at 8.4. Amps aren’t listed on their site or in the manual.

During my testing, the max achieved wattage was 215, so good rating at 220 watts. The amp limit I got was 38 amps with a 0.08-ohm coil, which is average for dual-18650 battery mods. The volt limit I got was 7.566V, so there is no boost circuit. Boost circuits aren't a requirement for dual-battery mods, but they're a big plus. The 8.4V listed is theoretical and won’t ever be reached without a boost circuit, so a 7.5V listing would have been more accurate.

Overall, it performs well in power (RBA) mode. It’s an accurate mod that tends to fire slightly higher than you set it for. It won’t do high watts at high resistances, but that's not a common use anyway. Even with a 0.63-ohm coil, I was able to get 95 watts. It performed pretty much the same as the DRAG 5 mod I reviewed last year.

The mod adjusts in full-watt increments. The scrolling is fine for normal usage, but it was a little annoying to have to keep spinning the dial to get up to 220 instead of holding a button. It does round-robin, though. You can see the full test results below.

As far as the charge rate goes, they list it at 5V/3A. Most chargers people use for their phones are 2.1A, so I used that for testing. The max charge rate I got during my testing was 1.32A, which is solid, but it should have been maxing my charger if the 3A rating was accurate. I had similar results with the DRAG 5, and I consider both of them overrated. Of course, the actual charge time will depend on your batteries, and it’s always better to use an external charger.

Another thing to note is that, while the batteries discharge pretty evenly, the percentage on the screen is a little off, and the soft cell cut-off is a little high at 3.40-3.45V (most mods will go down to 3.2V.) I had batteries down to 8 and 11% according to the mod, checked them with a multimeter, and got 3.49V on each of them—so battery life may feel a little lower compared to some other mods you currently use.

The mod charges in on/off cycles and appears to charge each battery individually, which is great. It also supports passthrough vaping, and charging pauses when you vape.

Temperature control performance

As always with my temp control testing, I used SS316, as it’s the most popular wire for temp control vaping. The temp control on the Spark220 is extremely limited.

I try to be gentle when it comes to temp control these days due to the lack of mods coming out with it. But unfortunately, the Spark220 doesn’t have wattage adjustment or even TCR adjustment. You just pick the mode and change the temp. This gave me issues as I couldn’t adjust how quickly the coils would heat up. In the dry burn test, I was able to set the coil on fire, which should never happen.

The Spark220 didn't pass my TC tests, and I consider it unsuitable for use in temp control.

Verdict

The VOOPOO VINCI Spark220 is a solid offering in a product category that many companies seem to be neglecting in recent years. It’s a great dual-18650 mod with an eye-catching design and dependable power mode performance. If you don’t care about temperature control (the Spark220 is not well calibrated for TC) the mod gets an easy recommendation.

The tank is nothing to write home about, but it's not bad as far as tanks in kits go and could be a solid backup tank. It doesn't produce great flavor, but it's well-built, and there are many coil options to try. If you already own a solid tank, you can always purchase the mod on its own.

I started doing reviews at the end of 2016 bringing a unique amount of data and fair points that has made them grow in popularity. I’m an avid temp control vaper but will vape pretty much any style of vaping. My goal is to bring as much good, fair, and unbiased information to the forefront as I can to aid vapers in making informed decisions to get the best vape for their style. I enjoy helping people really get the most out of their vape and finding their “aha” moment when it all clicks into place.
