MTL tanks are set up for a cigarette-like experience and are typically used with high-strength nicotine e-juice. But you don’t have to be a transitioning smoker to enjoy a mouth to lung style vape. Many vapers enjoy them for their concentrated flavor, discreetness, restrictive airflow, and pronounced throat hit.
Unlike sub ohm tanks and RTAs, MTL tanks will not produce huge clouds. They use higher-ohm coils, which run on less wattage. Check out our guide below to learn all about mouth to lung vape tanks. We also recommend the top MTL tanks currently on the market based on diligent testing and research.
A mouth to lung tank is a clearomizer that emulates the draw of a cigarette. Vaping on an MTL ecig involves a three-part process: draw vapor into the mouth, inhale it into the lungs, and then exhale. Sounds familiar, right?
In the early days of vaping, the term was redundant: all vape tanks were MTL. As technology advanced, more powerful devices entered the market. The airier atomizers and tanks that came with these powerful devices created the need for a distinction. And thus, the terms “mouth to lung tank” and “sub ohm tank” were born.
The tight draw is accomplished by a number of features that are present on most, if not all, MTL e-cig tanks:
Small airflow channels
These ensure that you have some resistance when vaping, as the air is channeled through a restricted area before it reaches your mouth.
High resistance coils
Most MTL coils use fine round wire or small mesh strips that produce minimal vapor. Typical resistances range from 0.7 to 1.2 ohms, though some are slightly lower or higher. MTL coils require much less power than large sub ohm coils, allowing lower consumption of higher-nicotine e-liquids.
Narrow chimneys
A reduced chimney helps maximize flavor while also ensuring a more defined throat hit from your vape.
Thin bore 510 drip tips
Thinner mouthpieces reduce the airflow and help emulate the feeling of smoking a cigarette.
A mouth to lung tank is generally considered the best kind of vape tank to quit smoking. From the Vivi Nova and CE4 days up until the arrival of the Aspire Nautilus series, MTL tanks have converted countless smokers to vapers. The reason is simple: the most practical way to quit is to replicate the experience that you are used to.
While the arrival of quality sub ohm tanks slowed the MTL market down, nicotine salt e-liquids and starter kits like the JUUL brought renewed interest. In fact, MTL tanks are often seen as upgrades to pod systems because they can be paired with vape mods and offer a more customizable experience.
Start by priming your coil: drip about 5 drops of e-liquid in the middle of the coil, then install it in the atomizer. Fill the tank and let it sit for a few minutes so the wick can saturate. This will prevent an instant dry hit when firing up the tank.
Check for the recommended wattage of your coil. It will be written on the coil itself, its package, or both. Start firing at the lowest recommended wattage and slowly work your way up, increasing by 1 watt for every 4-5 hits. This way, you can find your sweet spot without stressing the coil. Do not exceed the recommended wattage: most tanks are accurately rated, and firing above the recommendations may lead to nasty dry hits!
You don’t need to overdo it when drawing on an MTL tank. Take slow, steady pulls without forcing it. If you draw too hard, you’ll choke the airflow, which can make you cough.
Size and portability
MTL tanks are generally smaller than sub ohm tanks and easier to carry around. The most common MTL tank diameter is 22 mm; some tanks are even smaller. In comparison, most sub ohm tanks are usually 24 mm or larger.
E-liquid consumption
Because of their small coils, MTL tanks vaporize e-liquid conservatively, leading to less e-juice consumption.
Stealth vaping
The lower vapor production of MTL tanks allows for discreet vaping, which is commonly referred to as “stealth vaping.” If you don’t like drawing attention in public, then vaping on a tight MTL tank is the best way to avoid that.
Nic salt compatibility
Although nic salts are commonly associated with disposables and pod systems, nearly every MTL tank is equally compatible.
Less leaks
While no tank is truly “leak-proof,” the smaller airflow channels of MTL tanks make major leaks less likely. Plus, troubleshooting is much easier on a smaller tank than on a huge 6 mL cloud chucker.
Coil longevity
With less e-liquid running through the coils, you’ll often get more runtime out of them. This isn’t an exact science, but most MTL-style coils last about one to two weeks with average e-liquid consumption.
VG/PG ratio
As mentioned earlier, most MTL tanks feature smaller wick holes and coils. While coil tech has advanced a lot in recent years, most MTL coils function best with 50/50 VG/PG. Some can handle up to 70% VG, but rarely higher unless it is specifically designed for high-VG e-liquid.
Fewer e-liquid options
MTL tanks are more satisfying with higher-nicotine e-liquid. But due to the commercial success of sub ohm tanks, many premium juices with freebase nicotine only come in strengths up to 6 mg. In most cases, nic salts are your best option if you want a good flavor variety with high nicotine concentrations.
Not for clouds
Want to chuck big clouds? An MTL atomizer is probably not what you are looking for. These tanks are designed for use with higher nicotine strengths and will produce just enough vapor to satisfy nicotine cravings. They’re usually not recommended for direct lung vapers.
