Product intro and specs

In this review, I’ll be taking a look at the new VAPORESSO LUXE XR MAX 2. And yes, that's a lot of words for a name, so I’ll call it the “XR MAX 2” from here on out.

The all-new XR MAX 2 is a dual-use pod system that allows for medium-watt DL vaping and low-watt MTL vaping, all in one package—so plenty of variety. It’s an 80-watt max adjustable pod system with a listed 3200 mAh battery, dual mesh coils, multiple modes and options, adjustable airflow, and a 5 mL capacity. The XR MAX 2 is packed with versatility and features to suit almost anybody’s needs.

I reviewed the original XR MAX a little over a year ago, which was a great device. VAPORESSO has a long history of making solid products, so we’ll see how this one stacks up.

Price: TBA (at Element Vape)
Colors: Black, red, blue, silver, storm blue, flowing purple, imperial red leather, dark black leather

Build quality and design

Let’s go over the style and flair of the XR MAX 2. I got the red one, which is one of the eight color options. It has a nice, deep red frame with a matte finish. On the back is a carbon fiber panel with the LUXE logo running through the middle. The front features a 0.96-inch color screen and some LEDs behind a clear cover. You can also see part of the chip, giving it a futuristic look.

The bottom is soft silicone, which helps with grip and makes it more stable when standing upright. There’s also a handy lock slider on the bottom—a feature I always appreciate. It lets you pocket the device without fear of it misfiring.

Under the screen, you’ve got two touch arrows for the plus and minus buttons. The right side has a large airflow slider to adjust from a pretty open DL vape down to a loose MTL vape. The fire button is right above the screen.

It’s a fairly standard, wide, rectangular device with some thickness, but it still feels lightweight and sturdy. For a device capable of 80 watts and a large battery, it’s impressively compact. The paint holds up well in everyday use, and I’ve seen no signs of wear. The edges are rounded, making it comfortable to hold—not sharp or pointy. It’s a mix of basic, classy, and techy—all in one package.

Getting started

The XR MAX 2 is packed with features, but let’s start with the basic functions. The pods are exposed but tinted a little dark—I would’ve preferred clear ones for better juice visibility. They’re held in place by strong magnets and stay secure without any wiggle.

At the bottom of the pod, there’s the usual rubber plug for filling. The kit comes with two different pods that take replaceable coils: one for DL and one for MTL vaping. The difference lies in airflow—naturally, the MTL pod is tighter and pairs better with a more closed-off airflow.

Speaking of airflow, the controller on the side is a nice slider with two holes: a small one on top and a larger one below. Cover the larger hole for MTL, leave both open for DL, or set it halfway for a restricted DL draw.

The lock slider works as expected: slide it left to lock the device (the screen will indicate this), and right to unlock. The soft silicone bottom helps prevent tipping, which is a nice touch.

The large color screen is bright and easy to read, showing all essential stats—battery percentage, mode, power setting, puff counter, and resistance. The fire button is multi-functional: hold to fire, press twice for the menu, three times to adjust power, and five times to turn the device on or off.

In the menu, you’ll find various settings. One is the theme, with three choices:

  • Nebula (red)
  • Wave (blue)
  • Vital (deep blue/purple)

While I’d like to see more LED customization, it’s not a dealbreaker. You can also toggle Smart Mode on or off, which prevents power settings from going beyond what’s safe for your coil. For example, with the 0.8-ohm coil, it won’t let you go above 18 watts—helpful to avoid burning your coil.

There are two modes: Pulse and Eco, which essentially function like hard and soft preheat options for those who remember old mod settings.

Lastly, you can reset the puff counter, toggle the LED on or off, and perform a factory reset. Overall, it’s a good mix of advanced features and standard pod functions, making the XR MAX 2 stand out in a crowded market.

Performance

So, how does it vape? That depends on what you’re looking for. The DL pod comes with a 0.2-ohm coil, and the MTL pod has a 0.8-ohm coil. It’s compatible with the full LUXE X and XR family of pods and GTX coils.

For DL vapers, the 0.2-ohm dual mesh coil performs really well at 55–60 watts with the airflow fully open—or slightly closed if you prefer a more restricted draw. For a pre-made coil, it offers solid flavor and longevity.

For MTL vapers, the 0.8-ohm single mesh coil works best at 14–18 watts and also delivers good flavor and longevity. The LUXE and GTX coils have been around for years and are well known as solid-performing coils, so no surprises here at all. It’s a tried-and-true line of products, and the XR MAX 2 is another solid entry.

Battery life and charging

This is the part where I say that your mileage may vary, because battery life depends heavily on your vaping habits. That said, with a battery this large, you can expect days of use with the MTL coils. With the DL coils, it might get you through the day, but if you're a heavy user using it at 60 watts, probably not.

When it comes to the specs, the max charge rate is 1.89A (rounded to 2A), which is what's listed by VAPORESSO. When plugged in, the screen shows the current percentage and estimated charging time. It said 90 minutes from empty, and during that time, it charged consistently between 1.79A and 1.89A. It reached 100% at the 90-minute mark, and I measured the usable capacity at 2604 mAh.

However, like many devices, it continues charging for another 20 minutes at a lower rate (0.4A–0.2A), finally topping out at 2744 mAh after 110 minutes. So you get an extra 5% if you leave it a bit longer. It’s like saying you’re full at dinner, but somehow have some room left for dessert.

So, how does that align with the specs? VAPORESSO lists it at 3200 mAh. Based on extensive testing across over 100 devices, most deliver 80–90% of their rated capacity. This one falls at 86%, which is fair and in line with others.

As expected, it charges through a USB-C port on the bottom.

Verdict

I’ve reviewed many devices in the LUXE line, and VAPORESSO consistently delivers solid products. That’s their standard—and the XR MAX 2 meets it easily. It does what it promises, is portable, and offers excellent performance. Battery life is excellent (especially with the MTL pod), and you have a ton of options when it comes to compatible pods and coils. If you’re in the market for a new pod system, and especially if you like switching between MTL and DL vaping, the XR MAX 2 is well worth considering.

I started doing reviews at the end of 2016 bringing a unique amount of data and fair points that has made them grow in popularity. I’m an avid temp control vaper but will vape pretty much any style of vaping. My goal is to bring as much good, fair, and unbiased information to the forefront as I can to aid vapers in making informed decisions to get the best vape for their style. I enjoy helping people really get the most out of their vape and finding their “aha” moment when it all clicks into place.
