Dave Chappelle Vapes in New Netflix Special

Spyros Papamichail

We always love it when we see a smoker giving vaping a go. And if this smoker happens to be one of the funniest people alive, we love it even more.

Dave Chappelle went on stage to film his Equanimity stand up special rocking what appears to be a JUUL. In place of his usual American Spirits, the comedian now drags on his vape between punchlines. The special was released on New Year’s Eve and is one of the four that the comedian filmed for Netflix during his 2017 comeback.

Chappelle is known for being a heavy smoker on and off the stage and has even received a warning from Toronto Public Health for smoking non-stop during his 75-minute set in Canada back in 2012. In his legendary 2006 For what its worth special he jokes that he has been kicked out of a strip club for smoking and has even appeared in a 1999 movie called 200 cigarettes.

OK, you get it, Dave Chappelle has had his fair share of smokes.

Back to New Year’s special where Dave never skipped a beat when hitting the JUUL. Although the JUUL might be one of the best devices for stealth vaping, it's really hard to stealth anything when you are on a stage holding a mic in your hand. And he must've had his JUUL fully charged because it kept going... strong! The audience noticed it, and the popular pod system got some spotlight when, near the end of the show, a fan asked to “hit the vape pen”. Dave jokingly declined, adding that (tiny spoiler ahead) he’s been “playing cat-and-mouse with herpes for 30 years now.” Basic rules of hygiene: check.

Here's a clip from his latest comedy special, Equanamity, which features the 44-year-old comic stalking the stage of the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C., riffing on American culture, politics, and racism. The show is available on Netflix. If you don't like foul language, political incorrectness, or racialized comedy, don't watch it.

Add Chappelle’s name to a long list of celebrity vapers that includes Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, and Samuel L. Jackson. Whether famous vapers have any effect on the general public’s opinions on vaping is questionable, but they just might influence some smokers to give vaping a shot, or would-be smokers to make a safer choice.

Having quit smoking using vapes in 2016, I quickly developed somewhat of an obsession with all things vaping. I managed to turn my hobby into a full-time job, and I now work as the content manager here at Vaping360. In my free time you'll find me gaming on my PS5 or playing fetch with my dog, Buffy.
